Kay will be greatly missed every day by her children, Debbie(Stan) Plaisier, Brent(Tammy Taillieu), Warren(Alice) and Sharon for her lifetime of wisdom, patience, kind words and hugs and kisses. Grandchildren Brandee(Dan) Melanson, Jordyn Griffin-Rogers(Kayla Alarie), and Nicholas Rogers have only happy memories of her infectious smile, laughter, playing games and easy conversations with Grandma. They admired her positive attitude about life. Her Great-Grandchildren James, Ella and Lily Melanson will miss sitting on Grandma Kay’s lap to get soft hugs filled with love and video chatting about each days adventure.
Born in the farming community of Culp in northern Alberta to John and Alice Romanchuk, "Katie"as her father called her, grew up with 11 siblings helping her parents with raising livestock, farming wheat and barley, washing clothes by hand, cooking and baking on the wood burning stove and preserving the harvest from the huge garden next to the homestead. Kay has left behind her sisters Pearl McIntyre, Ollie Withrow and Anne (John) Grieve and sisters-in-law, Toni, Annette, Becky and Sylvianne who will miss the fun-loving sister “that loved to play softball, entertain and play most any board or card game”, but never CRIB!! Her siblings and their partners Bill(Stella), George, Nick, Orest, John, Stan, Nancy and twin Mary(Harry) Nishikaze left her world far too early.
Married in Grande Prairie in June 1957 to Lloyd Rollston Griffin, Kay traveled with her husband raising their family at his postings in Grande Prairie, Yellowknife, Toronto, Hay River and Lundbreck eventually moving to Edmonton where they spent their retirement years. She lost her loving husband of 58 years in 2016, and her in-Laws Rolly(Pauline) Griffin and brother Paul(Betty) all predeceased Kay. She has one surviving sister-in-law Betty, living in Ontario from the Griffin side.
Numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and acquaintances she made over her lifetime will sadly miss her openness, warm heart and gentle character.
Kay loved cruising, gardens, playing games and cards, bowling, floor curling and watching the Blue Jays or any curling event on TV. She loved to hear music in the background and was fond of artists like Charlie Pride, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion and Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass and if it had a good beat it would get her toes tapping and hands clapping.
Kay was an exceptional baker and cook and it was not uncommon to have unexpected guests or friends over for dinner or on a special Holiday. Her recipes for "Spudniks" or her soft chocolate chip cookies never stayed around for very long. All were welcome in her home and one never left hungry or without having shared a few laughs or memories.
The family of this vibrant and joyful woman would like you to join them by dressing comfortably and colorfully and share some of your memories of her at the following venue:
A Celebration of Kay’s Life will take place on Saturday July 6th, 2024 at 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Ukrainian Youth Unity Complex Banquet room, 9615 153 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
