November 17, 1930 - May 5, 2023
Marcello immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1954 at the age of 23. When he first arrived in Canada they took away his salami he had hidden in his luggage which was very disappointing to him. Marcello worked in Western Canada on the railroad and the odd painting job until 1956 when he began working at Healy Motors in Edmonton until his retirement in 1993. Marcello married his wife Frieda in 1957 and together they had one son, Gino. He is survived by his son, Gino (Tracy), grandchildren, Madison, Hayden and Ryley and great granddaughter, Charlotte. Marcello is predeceased by his wife, Frieda, father, Antonio Chies and mother, Angela De Pasqualin and siblings in Europe, Piero, Domenic, Maria and Santina.
Marcello was very involved with Knights of Columbus minor hockey at St. Edmunds and spent countless hours both coaching and managing teams for many years. His hobbies included camping and fishing with Frieda at Carson Lake, playing cards and lawn bowling at the Italian Cultural Centre on Sundays, making homemade wine and spending time with family. Marcello also enjoyed hunting for moose and snipe with his Italian friends. Marcello and Frieda would attend the grandkids sports at many arenas and baseball diamonds watching them play as they grew up. In his later years, Marcello enjoyed going for long walks every day to keep in shape. Marcello was a tremendous support to his wife, Frieda in her final year as her health began to fail.
Marcello was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather who always wanted the very best for his family. He will be dearly missed.
