Martin Walter Getzinger

Martin was a devoted husband of 58 years to his loving wife, Shirley (predeceased), and a dedicated father to his daughters, Lorraine (Owen), Wanda (Mike), and Brenda (Chris). He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to his five grandchildren Jessica, Rebecca, Matthew, Caitlin and Damen, who knew him as a loving and comical grandfather. Recently, he enjoyed the addition of two great grandchildren Zachery and Charlotte. He is survived by his sister Emma, brothers, Rhiney and Bill. Many nieces and nephews were the participants and victims of his relentless comical antics. He will be missed by a wide circle of family and friends.

Martin, shared a passion for travel, camping, quadding and bowling with his loving wife Shirley. He had many hobbies and interests such as golfing, watching Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Elks. In his 20’s though his 40’s he enjoyed rebuilding the motors of hot rods and muscle cars. Martin participated on the Amscot baseball team as a pitcher. Martin’s professional life consisted of being a heavy duty mechanic for the Alberta and Saskatchewan Oil Field industry. In his elder years he enjoy working at the Tofield Ice Arena doing maintenance and resurfacing the ice with the Zamboni. Martin enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden when he and his beloved wife Shirley lived at their Tofield acreage.

He lived his life with integrity and never shied away from hard work. He had a kindness, not wanting to impose. His most enduring quality was the immense gift in making people laugh. His laugh and smile will be dearly missed.

A celebration of Martin's life will be held at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail Edmonton, AB. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 2:00 pm to share stories and remember a remarkable man who loved well and was deeply loved in return.
