To Shirley, Kelly, Julie, Lyle and Michelle our condolences on loosing your best “Bud”.  He was everyone’s friend and loved all family occasions.  I will share that when his Sister and I were kids and Uncle Hicks let us have an old building to make a play house there were times we considered him a nuisance.  Always teasing.  He did make the best creamed new potato/fresh peas.  I remember that being his specialty!!

Many  years ago when the boys were small Merle and Shirley gave me a place to stay while finishing high school in Red Deer. They treated me like part of their  family. I will be forever grateful.
The whole HIcks Grover family were great people and Merle was no exception. It was a honour to call him my friend.

We are so saddened to hear of Merle's passing. He was a good friend for many many years. We both have such fond  memories of our times together, golf at the Banff Springs, curling in Vegreville, and a very special vacation to Hawaii. What fun that was. 
He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

Rest in Peace, Merle.
I must bake a Saskatoon Pie in your memory.
As I dry my tears, I must write this for Glen.
Merle and Glen were very close, always called each other on birthdays, golf games, curling and"here is the schedule for the next horse event, ball game, hockey or ringette tournament" Merle  was always there, occasionally the referee would know of his presence and opinion if a nephew or niece were in the event.
Family reunions were a million laughs. The brothers were not healthy last summer, both enjoyed the event immensely as they had for many years.
If the Good Lord enjoys a chuckle, he will now have 2 "bad apples" and "Hicksie" for entertainment.

I have only had the pleasure  of knowing merle 
 for  10 years . When I first met him  he made me so welcome  .  He had a great sense of humour and a presence  that light up the room 
He loved nothing  better than to gets us all in the car for a small road trip  to show me  places .
He love cooking especially  cookies and would often  claim that the cakes from safe ways were his own creations.. he talked often of his home when he was younger  and  of the many family gathering  they went to.
His wife Shirley was the love of his life and kelly and lyle  were his pride  and joy. Michelle  his granddaughter   is the best granddaughter ever.
I could go on it would fill a book .
I will miss him dearly.

I have so many wonderful memories of Merle, particularly when Merle & Shirley and my Mom came with me on their first cruise to the Caribbean to celebrate my 50th birthday, in 1998.  Merle came in the boat with me when I did a parasailing tour at Half Moon Cay, in the Bahamas, and then he and I went snorkelling together. We had so much fun onboard the ship that I think it started a travel bug that he, Shirley & Lyle enjoyed for several more cruises. 

Let’s see…other random fond memories: card games; barbecues (he was such a good cook); wine making; driving around to see hot-air balloons; Christmas decorations at the Legislature and Hawrelak Park; visits to the Calgary zoo and Heritage Park; trips to the Italian bakery and the pie shop; his hearty laughter, warmth and hospitality; his determination and hard work in all his jobs; his generosity and love for family; the time I first met him when he & Glen were renting a basement suite, with Fred Schindel, at the Scotts in Red Deer; the time he came for a ride-along on my Dad's cream route in Red Deer, Merle came into our kitchen as my Dad was getting ready and noticed my Mom’s glasses on the kitchen table, so he smeared jam on the lenses - he was a prankster for sure; the annual trips he and Shirley made to visit me in Calgary to see the Calgary Stampede Parade and the Grandstand Show; he could talk to anyone and made good friends; he was a volunteer for many years for Klondike Days and rode in the Klondike Posse with a beautiful palomino horse;  speaking of horses, I believe I have a picture of my brother Ken and I on Smokey at the Byemoor farm; I’m so glad he married my first cousin, Shirley, and that I got to know him for the past 60 plus years, he and Shirley would have been married for 61 years this coming May.   

I think above all I remember his kindness; he had a friendly, generous and considerate nature.  Rest easy, my friend, you will be missed by all who knew and loved you. 

I remember so clearly the holiday we went on & shared at Banff with you & Merle, Shirley. 
Edwin & I shared a cabin with you & Lil & Lloyd had another cabin   Lyle, Jim , Connie, Eugene & Becky were with us. So much fun & memories so long ago.
