I am deeply saddened to hear of Patty's passing. I was her patient for over 15 years and I always looked forward to our appointments as it was like visiting a dear friend.  We shared many stories about our families and laughed constantly throughout the appointment.  It is amazing just how adept you become at talking with instruments in your mouth! My heartfelt sympathies to her husband Tim, whom she spoke of with great love and affection. Rest in peace dear Patty. Your contagious smile and infectious laugh will be missed by all who knew you.

It's heartbreaking to see that beautiful Patti has passed.  I was  her patient for many years.  Pretty certain my appointments needed to be booked for so long because she had me laughing so much that she couldn't get her tools in my mouth to do her work, and she recounted such wonderful stories of her travels with her husband that it sometimes felt like I'd been on the same trip.  An appointment with Patti was better than any therapy.  I am grateful to have known her.  My sincere condolences to Patti's family.

Dental hygiene in Alberta has lost one of its pioneers and a fantastic role model. I had the pleasure of having Professor Gainer as my local anesthetic professor and clinical prof at the U of A 11 years ago. I will remember her for her calming demeanor, no matter how high the student's anxiety may have been. She was extremely knowledgeable and expected the best from her students but in a kind and compassionate way. Heaven has gained an angel to look after smiles up there. 

So saddened to hear of the world’s loss of Prof. Gainer- she was one of my very very favorite instructors when I went through the dental hygiene program 13 years ago

As children, we ventured to Edmonton from Pittsburgh every other year or so to visit our cousins.  We then often went camping in the Rockies or British Columbia together creating great bonds and memories...such as the starfish that were stored in the tent camper, bonfires and eating smores, the request for an egg foo yung milk shake at a Chinese restaurant in BC which advertised "milk shakes - any flavor" and the cousin special floats we always had.

Patty left this Earth way too young...

My thoughts and prayers ho out to everyone who is mourning Patty's passing.  Courageous and passionate are two descriptors that come to mind immediately.  

I had the pleasure of working with Patty for many years as colleagues in dental hygiene.  Her passion for this profession, including ensuring dental hygiene care was available to all, came shining through in every interaction.  She will be greatly missed both personally and professionally.  

I was saddened to read of Patty’s recent passing. I worked with Patty in our dental practice years ago and remember many humorous moments. At times a dental practice can be stressful and Patty had such a sense of humour that would make the task a lot easier. Even though I haven’t seen Patty in years, my memories of her is something that I will always cherish.

Patty was a gift. She was a loyal wife, devoted partner, and best friend of my brother Tim. We always enjoyed their visits from the west. Patty’s calm, reflective manor added common sense to any conversation. When visiting with our mom, Patty was so kind and thoughtful and always willing to offer mom assistance. When we visited Edmonton, Patty graciously hosted us to lovely visits in their beautiful garden which she worked hard to nurture and gave her a great sense of joy. Patty and I had many conversations over the years and the common theme would be at least one belly laugh. Patty found joy in so much around her that it was easy to find commonalities and have a good chuckle. She always asked about her nieces and nephews and appreciated hearing about their families. Patty had a beautiful soul that was manifested on the inside and out. We will miss her dearly :( 

I was so, so sad to hear of Patty's passing. My memories of her are all connected to the Ewenson-Gainer escapades of our childhood. We older kids were always tasked with looking after the youngest ones, so of course we had to take Patty with us wherever we went. Naturally, we went to great lengths to convince her to stay home and, when that didn't work, we tried to lose her, but she was tenacious! She was also incredibly quick-witted even then, so in the end we really didn't mind having her with us. And now I just can't believe that she is gone. To Tim, to Brenda, Murray and Anita, I share your loss, but I will remember Patty with so much fondness from those happy childhood times.

Patty certainly taught me to count cribbage points carefully in our youths, as she was always ready to triumphantly shout "Muggins!" and steal the points I had neglected to peg.

I have profoundly fond memories of the Gainer girls from my summers at Pigeon Lake.  My life in Maine is a conscious attempt to retain the joys I had knowing Patty, Anita,Murray,Brenda, Wally and Jean and the outdoor life.   Our boat trips across the lake to visit are still some of the warmest and joyful of my life.  Patty's beaming upbeat nature and her shimmering smile and blonde hair left an indelible standard for the beauty and personalities I seek in friendship to this very day!  The world is in need more than ever of women of her professional and personable nature.   I extend my condolences to family and friends....Patty may have gone onward and upward but I for one will always smile with serenity when I pause to think of this wonderful beautiful lady!  I am blessed to have these memories.  Thank you dear Patty.

I am still stunned. I hadn't really put thought to how much of my childhood Patty was a part of. I have known Patty since she was 5.  I spent hours and hours at the Gainer house playing with Patty and Anita.  I have many, many warm memories. So much laughter, so many hysterical escapades. Hanging out at the Gainers during junior and senior high saved me from intense loneliness. Their home, including Patty, was my Oasis.

I will always remember Auntie Patty as so full of fun. She was such a good sport – one year during a game of New Year’s Eve charades she drew ‘Johnny on the Spot’ and had us all in stitches with her miming! I also remember fondly her tradition of hanging toothbrushes on the Christmas tree, labelled for each person. And her despairing comments on the dentitions in old movies! 

Professor Gainer was such a light. Every day that I had her as my instructor I knew it would be a good day. She taught me to be patient with myself and not to give up when I got frustrated, and that's something I'll carry with me throughout my career. You'll be dearly missed by all of your DH students, Professor Gainer. We'll make you proud! 

The first thing one thinks of about Patty is her sense of humour. She had a wry wit and I remember laughing through many aerobics classes with her at Garneau school and the university.  We also used to have  lighthearted lunches together when we were both on staff there.  Also many good memories of fun out at Pigeon Lake in many designs of bathing suits (and accompanying jokes) through the years. I am relieved she is past her suffering and will always think of her with that smile. 

It’s hard to write a memory of Patty—there are so many. Mostly it was her sense of humour. She was witty and just loved a laugh. One thing she and Anita used to do was come up with words or phrases that had private funny meanings in the family. Whenever I came home from the east I had to learn a whole new vocabulary to keep up. Once you knew the code you could quickly say a word and then everyone in the family would dissolve in laughter. My husband termed this “the Gainer lore.” She nicknamed Mom “Goose” years ago and that stuck for decades. Some if you will remember “Hello Dolly” (with actions). Or “very easy, very simple!”  Or “currrrrly.”  And so many more.
