Sant Singh Ahluwalia, born August 20, 1934, in Kamuli, Uganda passed away peacefully on September 16, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta, after a full and remarkable life journey that took him across continents. He lived in diverse corners of the globe, including Africa, India, the UK, Canada, and the USA.
Affectionately known as "Khul," Sant was predeceased by his mother, Tarlochan Kaur, father, Parmatma Singh, sisters, Ajit Kaur, and Manmohan Kaur, and his lifelong friend and cherished brother, Gurbax Singh Dhesi (aka “Baxi”).
Sant is dearly missed by his wife of over 65 years, Jasjit Kaur, and their sons; Amarjit, and his wife Barinderjeet, along with their children Teghpreet, and Karanveer; Sony, and his wife Ruth, and their daughter Raj; and Ravi, and his daughter Auva.
Sant also leaves behind his three brothers: brother Amar Singh, his wife Jaswinder, and their children Arvinder, Manvinder, Tarveen, Rupinder and Pavan; brother Manohar Singh, his wife Surinder Kaur, and their children Kiranjit and Manjit; brother Ranjit Singh, his wife Neelu, and their children Simriti and Yogeshwar; and his sister Ajit’s daughters, Manjit (Babo), Maninder (Nikki), Arvinder (Puppa); and his sister Manmohan’s sons; Dalbir, Gagan, and Anil. Beyond immediate family, Sant formed many deep bonds with extended family and friends who visited with Sant and Jasjit often, and whom they cherished, and relished their visits.
Outside his immediate family, Sant will be deeply missed by his beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, all of whom he often spoiled with Quality Street or Cadbury’s chocolates, and in later years entertained with stories of his many adventures.
Sant held numerous passions, including a love for travel, cars and learning about and protecting wildlife. Above all he treasured nothing more than sharing delicious food during spirited conversations at family and friends’ gatherings that extended into the early hours of the morning. He could often be found chopping vegetables with machine cut precision at the Gurdwara and at home, or researching and reading news articles on his computer. He believed in living life to its fullest extent and squeezed the goodness out of every second of his life.
Sant dedicated a lifetime to learning, and was self-taught in many things; from his vocation and hobby of working as a mechanic for over 70 years; or learning about technology and being able to fix anything including household appliances. He later learned to use the internet, for researching and reading news articles. Sant was always abreast of what was happening in the world and loved to share his knowledge on almost any subject when asked.
Sant will be remembered for his passion and engaging conversations, his great sense of humour, and his ability to weave a good story with his many adventures. He did not hesitate to drive for hours or days to see his grandchildren wherever they lived and he loved playing and engaging in activities with them when they were little. He loved to teach his sons, and others, about cars and how to make minor repairs or major ones depending on their courage. Sant and Jasjit spent almost 66 years loving and caring for each other – Sant cared for his wife very much, thoughtful of her needs and wishes and often surprised her with gifts. His presence touched many hearts.
A visitation for Sant will be held Sunday, October 1, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St Albert Trail, Edmonton, AB T5L4X1, followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
