Sarb was born on August 16, 1955, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Kartar Singh Gill and Harbans Kaur Bal. As the eldest of three children, he took his role as big brother to Manjit and Chan seriously, always looking out for them and helping guide them through life. Seven and nine years younger than Sarb, his siblings benefited from his steady support, particularly when it came to their education.
After completing high school, Sarb began his career in the IT department at the Federal Agriculture Institute of Malaysia, where he developed the technical skills that would shape his professional life.
In 1978, Sarb met Kalwant through family-arranged introductions. After a few meetings, they became engaged that same year and were married on March 31, 1979. Their marriage spanned more than 47 years and was built on love, commitment, and the life they created together. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Bimal (Avdyl) and Veera (Thom), and two beloved grandchildren, Aanya and Aavi, who brought immense joy to his life.
In 1988, Sarb and Kalwant made the difficult decision to leave behind their family and the life they knew in Malaysia in pursuit of better opportunities for their daughters in Canada. Sarb moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he worked several jobs while continuing his education at the University of Manitoba. Those early years brought many challenges, but through determination, hard work, and perseverance, he laid the foundation for his family’s future. In 1990, Kalwant, Bimal, and Veera joined him in Canada, beginning the next chapter of their lives together.
Sarb went on to build a successful 34-year career as an IT consultant, working with several companies and eventually operating his own business, BMS Gill Corp. His dedication, technical knowledge, and strong work ethic were hallmarks of his professional life. Beyond his professional career, Sarb played an instrumental role in supporting and advancing Bimal's Optometry Clinic, generously sharing his expertise and overseeing human resources, administration, and all IT-related matters. His practical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to helping his daughter succeed made him an invaluable part of the clinic’s growth and daily operations.
After retiring, Sarb moved to Alberta to be closer to his cherished grandchildren, embracing the opportunity to spend more time with them and be part of their lives.
Sarb had a kind and generous heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Whether it was family, friends, or complete strangers, he welcomed the opportunity to help anyone in need. Sarb and Kalwant opened their home to people moving to Canada, offering them a place to stay and the support they needed as they adjusted to a new country. Whether family or friends, many found a warm welcome under their roof. Their home became a place of comfort, generosity, and belonging for all who passed through its doors.
Sarb was also someone people turned to for advice, particularly when navigating administrative matters and paperwork. His intelligence, extensive knowledge, and practical approach made him a trusted source of guidance for so many. He had a remarkable ability to make complicated matters easier to understand and was always willing to share his time and expertise to help others.
Giving back to his community was important to Sarb. He was involved in community service through Singh Sabha Gurudwara in Winnipeg and was a proud O-positive blood donor, generously giving in a way that could help save lives. Throughout their years in Canada, Sarb and Kalwant also supported several charitable organizations, including World Vision and Save the Children, reflecting their shared compassion and desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Sarb was known for his love of travel and golf, two passions that brought him countless wonderful memories and opportunities to connect with family and friends. He loved exploring new places and experiencing all that the world had to offer. In recent years, he was fortunate to cross Scotland and New Zealand off his travel bucket list, creating treasured memories that he would carry with him.
Sarb had a zest for life and a way of living that was entirely his own. He did not dwell on the past; instead, he embraced the present, living in the moment with an open heart, without reservations or judgment. He valued the people around him, welcomed new experiences, and found joy in the simple act of being together. His approach to life was a reminder to appreciate each day, cherish the people we love, and make the most of the time we have.
Sarb’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the people he supported, the doors he opened, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. His generosity, wisdom, resilience, and love for his family will continue to guide and inspire those he leaves behind. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact of his life will endure through the many lives he touched and the love he leaves in the hearts of his family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on October 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Hainstock’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 9810 34th Ave NW, Edmonton, AB.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
