It is with profound sadness and deep love that the family of Shirley Ann Beattie (née Sprague) announces her sudden passing on March 18, 2026. Shirley was born on August 18, 1955, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Eva and George Sprague, both of whom predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband, Norman.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her partner, Ron de Clercq, her sons Troy (Loretta) and Craig (Anne), and by the great joys of her life—her granddaughters, Claire and Nora. She is also survived by her sister Gail Kehler, her brother Earl Sprague, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who were touched by her kindness and care.
Shirley lived life with intention, curiosity, and an open heart. She had an extraordinary love of travel and embraced the world with enthusiasm and wonder, journeying across nearly every continent alongside Ron, family, and dear friends. In true Shirley fashion, she approached travel as a way to connect—with places, cultures, and people. Antarctica remained the only continent she had yet to set foot on, a testament to a life lived expansively and adventurously.
Family was always at the centre of Shirley’s world. She dedicated herself to helping those she loved achieve their dreams, offering encouragement, practical support, and unwavering belief. Whether through her eye for home interior design, her joy on the dance floor—especially during a quickstep or a merengue—or the cherished moments spent with her granddaughters, Shirley brought warmth, elegance, and generosity into every space she entered.
Even in her final moments, Shirley’s remarkable generosity of spirit shone brightly. Through the gift of organ donation, she gave others the chance to continue living fully, just as she always had. Her legacy is one of love freely given, journeys joyfully taken, and a family forever enriched by her presence.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honour Shirley by spending meaningful time with your loved ones, or by making a donation to the University Hospital Foundation.
Shirley will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
