Steve Lobay

The family of Steve Lobay of Edmonton is saddened to announce his passing on August 15, 2026, at home following a brief illness; he was just weeks short of his 98th birthday.

Steve will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Ann; his children Gwen (Norman) Schubert, Derald (Lannetta) Lobay, Shelly Minarik, and Alayne (Darren) Ness; his seven grandchildren Dane, Logan, Luke, Anna, David, Kailey, and Tyson; and his three great-grandchildren Amethyst, Leon, and Selene.

Steve was predeceased by his grandson Chris Hansma and his son-in-law Martin Minarik. Steve was also predeceased by his parents, John and Anastasia Lobay; his brothers John, Andrew, Bill, Harry, Fred, and Nick; and his sister Mary.

Steve grew up as the youngest in a family of six children on the family farm near Spedden, Alberta. He dedicated his career to education, beginning as a teacher in the Spedden and Vilna areas, followed by positions in the Coal Branch region and later in Edmonton. In 1972, Steve became a school principal, a role he held until his retirement in 1987.

Even after retirement, Steve continued sharing his passion for learning by providing private mathematics tutoring to elementary and junior high school students, continuing well into his late eighties.

Together, Steve and Ann raised four children, instilling in them a love of the outdoors, camping, hiking, skiing, climbing, and other sports. Steve himself enjoyed playing, coaching, and enthusiastically following a variety of sports throughout his life.

Family was always at the center of Steve's life. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; there are many fond memories of having large, long family dinners at their Edmonton home. Known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others, he could always be counted on to lend a hand whenever it was needed.

Steve spent most of his adult life in Edmonton's Belgravia neighborhood before moving in his early nineties to Sherwood Park. Steve was well liked and warmly cared for by fellow residents of their senior living complex in Sherwood Park. In their Sherwood Park condo, Steve received daily assistance with contracted staff through Home Care, and he was particularly fond of support from Carol and Grace. In November 2025, Steve and Ann made their final move together to Laurier House Lynnwood, in Edmonton.

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Laurier House Lynnwood for the compassion and support they provided to Steve and Ann during Steve's final weeks.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Hainstock Funeral Home, 9810 34 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta.
