Dr. Tapan Basu passed away on May 17, 2020 at the age of 80. Over the past two years he was being treated for amyloidosis and a rare blood cancer, Waldenstrom macroglobunemia. He is survived by his wife, Sutapa; daughters, Anita Doeve and Malini Shires; son in laws, Roy Doeve and Craig Shires; granddaughters, Isabella Doeve and Sophia Doeve; and siblings, Barun, Biva and Maya.
Dr. Basu was born in India, obtained graduate degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Calcutta followed by Master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Biochemistry form University of London. Subsequently he obtained his PhD from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. He was a world leading expert in micronutrients and phytochemicals in relation to health and disease. As a distinguished professor, he held the prestigious McCalla Professorship and Killam Annual Professorship at the University of Alberta. He received numerous accolades including the National “Borden Award”, given by the Canadian Society for Nutrition. He was involved with International College of Nutrition for almost two decades, where he was the executive director for several years and headed the ICN sponsored World Congress of Clinical Nutrition 2011, in New Delhi, India for the last time.
Dr. Basu will be fondly remembered by family, friends and colleagues as a dedicated husband, loving father, and devoted grandfather (Dadu). His soft-spoken gentle presence and beautiful smile will never be forgotten.
