On April 24, 2012, Dr. “Lochan” Bakshi passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 86.
He will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his family including his three sons Bobby, Kamal & Ravi; their mother Yeshwant; daughter-in-law Karyn; grandsons Vijay & Ajay; sister Rajbans; nieces Deepi (Chander) & Bubbles; nephew Paul; grand-niece Anika; and extended family, colleagues and friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the medical and support teams at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Glenrose Rehabiliation Hospital for their excellent care.
Lochan received his PhD from Washington State University and began a career as a professor that took him across the globe. His strong belief in accessible University education brought him to Athabasca University (AU) in 1972 as the first academic staff hire, and where he developed their first distance-learning course that became the basis from which the university has grown.
Lochan received the Order of Athabasca for his contribution to AU. A lifelong Rotarian, he was also the founding member of the Athabasca Rotary Chapter and was recognized by SAGE for his volunteer contributions.
Lochan continued to challenge the status quo from his hospital bed and many of his letters & articles were published. Most recently he reignited the discussion on the right to die with dignity.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2012 @ 1:00 PM at Hainstock's Funeral Home, 9810-34 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the T.S. Bakshi Herbarium at Athabasca University, 1 University Drive, Athabasca AB T9S 3A3
