Virender Singh Rao

7 May, 19534 June, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Virender (Raj) Singh Rao announce his unexpected passing on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at the age of 67. He has joined his late parents, Haripal Singh Rao and mother Jaswant Kaur in the next phase of their journey.

Raj was born on May 7, 1953, in Deheru, Punjab and was one of 6 siblings. After completing his Masters of Science in Anthropology at Punjab University Chandigarh, he immigrated to Canada in July 1978. Shortly thereafter, he married the love of his life, Harvinder on August 20, 1978 after which they decided to call Edmonton their home. They were blessed with 2 sons, Harvir & Deshvir.

In Edmonton, Raj started his career at Triple M Fiberglass Manufacturing where he worked for 27 years. He was a very strong believer in working hard to accomplish your goals. Raj was a very warm and caring person who would do anything he could to help someone. His morals and principles are unmatched by many.

On his days off, you could always find Raj gardening in his yard in Edmonton or on the fields of his home in Punjab – this was his sanctuary, a place of meditation of sorts.

Raj will be greatly missed by his wife: Harvinder, sons: Harvir & Deshvir, sisters: Sudarshan Gill, Rajinder Mangat, Parminder Grewal, and Ravinder Jassar, brother: Narinder Rao, brothers-in-law: Gurdeep Gill, Gurdev Mangat, Harinder Grewal and Balvinder Jassar, sister-in-law: Manjit Rao, In-laws family: Gurnihal & Manpreet Virk, Gurvinder & Sukhdev Kullar, Tejpaul & Rano Virk, Harpreet & Ravinderjit Gill, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandniece and very close friends.

The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 12:00 pm at Hainstock's Funeral Home & Crematorium, 9810- 34th Ave, Edmonton, AB. The online portion will commence at 1 PM.

I cannot think of a moment in my life when Mamaji was not present. I grew up in Mamaji and Mamiji's house, my cousins were my siblings, we were always together. My memories are what one would expect with family, good times. I remember spending long nights at Mamaji's house watching Hindi movies. The whole family would get together, some of us on the couch, divan, and stairs. It was cozy and full of love. That is what I think of when I think of the home that he made, cozy and full of love. The door was always open, everyone knew the password to the doors. It was never a surprise or "why are you here", but happiness and his open arms when people came over.

Hearing about the story today of Mamaji saving the bird is no surprise, but it was also my first time hearing it. When I was in high school, he found a pigeon and named him Lucky. He brought him home and took care of it and raised it. He loved life and nurturing not only his family, but living things. This must have been something taught to Mamaji by Nanaji, because I remember Nanaji trying to teach me the same thing, to value all life.

Mamaji, I will miss being able to pop in unexpected. I will miss seeing you play with Sehaj. Thank you for taking care of him and allowing me the time to study on my maternity leave. I am sorry that you will not be able to meet my soon to be baby. I promise to try to make my house as open and loving to all of our family as you did. You truly were a gravitational force keeping us all together for so many years. I am sorry that our family drifted apart and for all the tough times you had to endure. I will always love you and keep you in my heart. Until we meet again.

Harvirji, Deshvirji, and Mamiji - may you find the strength to continue to move the world as Mamaji did.

Raj your smile, I will never forget. Whenever I think about you , you are always coming smiling towards me in the corridor of one of the hostel of Punjab University Chandigarh.
Raj stayed with me in Kelowna for more than a year but his heart was always in the house which he built for his family in Edmonton .
We have heard stories about Sarwan ,but ,what I heard about Raj, he was not less than him at all.
Before he moved back to Edmonton, he tought us one important thing , never waste food..
Raj I will always remember your Sholle Bhaturey you cooked at our farm.
May your soul live peacefully in Heaven along with your parents ‘.

Mammu… From you I have learned about working hard and taking pride in a job well done. Doing it right, and with excellence the first time!

I remember working over the weekend in the office one time and my boss being surprised by it… I told him your story and what we watched you do growing up. How could we not do the same?

I wish you didn't have to leave us so soon… We had so many things unfinished… Words… Bear hugs… Documenting the Rao history… so many things…

I'm not sure if I can ever eat a laddoo or a shakkar para ever again without thinking of you… Especially with chai without sugar ;-)

I promise to help keep an eye out for Mamiji and the kids as you did with us when we were little…Love you Mammu… Until we meet again.
