Henry C. Heil, Jr., age 92, died on March 9, 2024, in San Diego. Henry was born on November 27, 1931, to Mary Duncan Heil and Henry C. Heil. He grew up in Larchmont, NY and graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1949. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan where he served as President of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After serving two years of active duty as an officer in the United States Navy, he settled in San Diego where he married his first wife, Cecelia Miller. Soon they moved to Ann Arbor so Henry could earn an MBA at the University of Michigan. The family returned to San Diego where they raised their four children before divorcing in 1988. Henry continued his naval career in San Diego serving in the reserves where he attained the rank of Commander.
Known for witty commentary and a quick sense of humor, Henry had a way of making those around him feel welcome and at ease. His charm, wit, and generous spirit were complemented by a deep love for animals, especially dogs. In 2000, he married Rachel Amado, and together they transformed a plain home in Alpine, CA, into Maverick Ranch, a beloved cowboy-themed residence. Henry and Rachel bred and raised whippets and border collies; maintained a riding arena with three horses; and had a beloved donkey named Rosebud.
While his professional career involved operating nursing homes, Henry found true joy in his life on Maverick Ranch, surrounded by his dogs, family, neighbors, and the serene beauty of the countryside. His quick wit and charm will be sorely missed by all who are lucky enough to have known him.
Henry was predeceased by his daughter, Cathy Petersen. He is survived by his wife Rachel; daughters, Lisa Heil, and Marianne Ward (David); his son, David (Sherry); his sister, Marianne Smalley, and his stepchildren Jana and Seth. He also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held for friends and family at a later date.
If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the Whippet Health Foundation (whippethealth.org) or the Helen Woodward Animal Center (animalcenter.org).
