February 26, 1930 – August 6, 2025
John Francis Nooney was born on February 26, 1930, in Missoula, Montana, to his devoted parents, John H. and Lorena Mary Nooney. He was the youngest of three children, growing up under the loving watch of his older sisters, Kaye and Eileen.
During John’s early years, his family relocated from Missoula to Glendale, California. His childhood was shaped by resilience and responsibility. John's father, a World War I veteran, suffered lasting medical complications after being mustard gassed in the war. As a result, John began working from a young age to help support his family — taking on roles at the local fairgrounds, working with the circus, and delivering Nesbit Orange Soda. His strong work ethic and quiet determination were evident from the start.
While attending high school, John continued to contribute to his family by working at a local grocery store. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and proudly served during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he began his studies at Woodbury College, where he met the love of his life, Irene Avalos. The two were married on August 13, 1955, beginning a life together that would last nearly seven decades.
Together, John and Irene built a beautiful life. They welcomed two daughters, Cheryl and Kathleen, and eventually settled in El Cajon in 1960. It was at that time that John purchased his own cement truck and started a business delivering cement for various companies. El Cajon became their forever home, and the community quickly became their extended family.
John was a man of faith and service. He was an active and devoted member of Holy Trinity Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elk’s Club, and Toastmasters. Professionally, John’s career reflected his natural charisma and gift for connection with people. He later became part-owner of Monolith Portland Cement Company where he continued his role in sales which expanded throughout California, Arizona and Nevada. John eventually sold his company and retired in the early 80’s. Even in retirement, John’s entrepreneurial spirit thrived through his involvement in several multi-level marketing ventures. At his core, he was a natural when it came to sales — but more than that, he was a people person.
John had a special way of making those around him feel truly seen and valued. His calm demeanor, empathetic heart, and warm smile made him someone others were drawn to. Whether it was with a simple conversation or a word of encouragement, John had an uncanny ability to lift others up.
He appreciated life’s simple pleasures — a cold can of Coke, a piece of See’s candy, or a smashed Weber bread bologna sandwich, but nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-granddaughters, whom he adored beyond measure.
On August 6, 2025, John passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love. His absence leaves an immense void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be forever remembered for his kindness, positivity, and unwavering love for his family and community.
John Francis Nooney’s life was one of quiet strength, enduring faith, and deep compassion — a legacy that will live on in the many lives he touched.
