On Thursday, December 31, 2020, Sandra Jean Becker of Polish descent, passed away at the age of 73. Sandra is survived by her two children, Eric (spouse Vonda) and Kevin (spouse Summer); her sister-in-law, Sandi; six grandchildren, Kyle (spouse Amey), Laura, Emily (spouse Joe), Natalie, Nate and Dillon; one great-grandchild, Adeline; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Sandra was born in Hamtramck, Michigan to Leon (Leo) and Genevieve (Jean) Krist, where she grew up with her older brother Richard (16 years her senior) and sister Lorraine (18 years her senior). She grew up on a farm and would talk about her memory of running from the rooster as it chased her. Growing up with older siblings allowed her to enjoy music and movies from an earlier era. One memory she had was baking and dancing to Glenn Miller with her sister.
She married Gary Becker in 1966 and relocated to San Diego. She lived with her brother, Richard, until Gary was honorably discharged from the Navy. She was a loving wife and mother, and always made the time to spend with her family. Sandra was a fervent believer and inspired so many with her grace and peace. She stood firm on the belief that “The just shall live by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4).
She was an avid reader, baker, hostess, and above all, a prayer warrior. She owned many books and would read certain series over and over. She knew the books so well that she could not bear to see a movie change the context. She loved to bake, and at Christmastime, she unbelievably delivered incredible amounts of cookies and cinnamon bread to everyone she knew. Friends would count on receiving her cinnamon bread. Not only did she bake, but she was also an amazing hostess. She loved to set the dinner table beautifully and shower her guests with food, as well as prepare comfortable places to sleep if their guests wanted to stay. Anyone was always welcome.
She was a strong, faithful, prayer warrior. That is an attribute to be admired. She faithfully prayed for everyone and anyone who needed it. She would not only remember to pray for people, but she was sure to check up on the person she was praying for to encourage them. Towards the end of her life, it was sweet to see friends and family come to say goodbye and specifically thank her for praying for them. She spread joy, encouragement, and peace everywhere she went.
She had such a joy for life and would talk to everyone she saw. She called everyone by name, even the plumber who only came once. She genuinely cared about everyone’s well-being. She also had a passion for learning the Hebrew language as well as the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. She made travels to Israel, which she held very dear.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. Her disciplined, loving, and gracious life showed us how we should strive to live. Her legacy will remain in the values she taught us and the grandchildren as she lived her life in faith, grace, and love. She will be deeply missed, and always in our hearts.
