Gene L. Summers

Gene was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a graduate of Loyola University with a degree in Philosophy. He spent most of his active working years with General Electric as a credit manager of industrial and commercial accounts in Syracuse, Amherst, Buffalo, San Antonio and Dallas. More than 20 years was spent in the Dallas area and he was active as a board member of various organizations including Salvation Army and Literacy Council.

Gene moved to Junction City in 1994 and quickly became involved as the City Coordinator and an Alderman for Junction City. During the past 20 plus years, he has continued to serve on the City Council and Union County Literacy Council. He was also involved the Arkansas’ South Tourism Association as a board member, chairman of ArkLaFest, co-chair of project TOUCH and the United Way of Union County and worked with the American Red Cross and DHS/DOV Advisory Council. At the time of his death, he was a Commissioner on the Arkansas Service Commission, Junction City Alderman, chairman of the Junction Food Pantry and vice-president of the Junction City Development Corporation.

He was preceded in death by Arthur and Sadie Lowery and Marvin and Voncille Reed. He is survived by his brother Robert Lowery of Junction City, extended family Foxy and Earline Lowery of Hazelhurst, MS, Pat and Jimmy Davis of Monroe, LA, Wanda and Hubert Jolley of Junction City and Donny and Karen Lowery of Florence, AL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews along with special companions Cricket and Goldie.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 2, 2012 from 1:00-2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Junction City. A Memorial Service will follow at 2 PM at the church with Rev. Lynn McClure officiating. Burial will follow in Scotland Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
