OBITUARY
Richard Davis MD
20 March, 1957 – 11 January, 2021
Richard Keith Davis, Sr., M.D., 63 of Smackover went to his eternal home on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
Born March 20, 1957 he was the son of James Robert and Sylvia Columbus Davis in Little Rock. Dr. Davis was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Smackover, along with Mallard Bayou Duck Club, 3D Deer Camp, Oaklawn Jockey Club, Board of Smackover State Bank, American Chemistry Council and Phosgene Medical Task Force in Washington D.C. Dr. Davis was the company doctor for many years to Clean Harbors, El Dorado Chemical, Lanxess Corporation and multiple small companies. He was the Medical Director for Elite Home Health.
Preceding him in death along with his father was one brother, James Thomas Davis. Survivors include his wife of 46 years Sheila Davis, two sons, Dr. Richard Keith Davis, Jr and his wife Dr. Jennifer Davis of Smackover, Steven Robert Davis and his wife Katie Davis of Smackover, and his mother Sylvia Davis. Surviving grandchildren are 3 granddaughters, Courtney, Haley and Isabella “Izzy” and great grandson, Lennon Davis. Dr. Davis is also survived by a brother, Michael Steven Davis and his wife Denise of Sherwood, AR. and a sister, Lori Wallace and husband Robert of Leesville, LA. along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. Davis did his undergraduate study at Hendrix College and University of Central Arkansas in Conway. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock in 1983. He completed his family practice residency at AHEC in El Dorado in 1986. He then began his 34 years of practice at Smackover Family Practice Clinic where he served our community as the epitome of a small town country doctor. He used his great intelligence along with his big heart and compassion to treat his patients like family. He saved numerous lives and touched thousands.
Doc was a lover of outdoors. Hunting and fishing with his family and friends was a big part of his life. He loved camping with his family, especially his granddaughters. He loved the art of thoroughbred horse racing. He raced, owned and bred horses at one time. He was also an excellent chef, who loved creating specialty dishes. However, his greatest love of all was his family. Nothing could compare to spending time with his sons, granddaughters and his new great grandson. His greatest accomplishment was accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. His family has the assurance that he is in the presence of the Almighty Lord.
Public viewing for friends and family will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 16, at Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Smackover. The Davis family asks that pandemic precautions be observed by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing for those that are well enough to attend.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 2021 Maple Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Benji McCann officiating. Interment will follow in Smackover Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors. We are honoring him with his favorite camo attire. Please dress however you are comfortable.

To the Family: Thank you for sharing all these personal photographs. I trust it was as cathartic for you to sort through your memories as it was for me to see him relaxed with the family he loved and doing fun things he enjoyed.
There is absolutely nothing personal about "Dr. Richard" I can add to the observations and expressions of love shared by other patients and friends.
The one thing I can offer is my objective appreciation of this great man and physician. The traits that seem remarkable to me and prompt my admiration and, yes, love include: his world-class intelligence, his dedication to his profession and patients by staying current in medical journals and published papers, his careful analysis of reported symptoms and observations of affect, his absolute humility in being ready and willing to refer patients to specialists, his double-checking of the conclusions proposed and treatments performed by other doctors seen by his patients (surely to check their conclusions with his and satisfy himself that nothing was overlooked, and probably to see if there were something he could learn,) his Christian love and compassion for patients, his patience with patients :-), his not dismissing patient complaints without careful evaluation, his phenomenal memory and application of the experiences and observations from years of practice, his sharing stories and jokes to relax and reassure us who were in a stressful medical environment with anxieties about our futures.
Thank you Mrs. Davis for being willing to share him as he worked long hours taking care of us. Please be confident that we will be supporting you, the rest of the family, friends, and office staff with sincere and earnest prayers.

I called on Dr. Davis, Dr. Keith, sweet Miss Sheila and the clinic for many years as a Pharma rep for GlaxoSmithKline. Dr. Davis always had the best stories and the way he told them with a syrupy Southern drawl made me always think of sweet tea and good cookin'! Dr. Davis was always positive and asked how I was doing even as he darted from room to room helping his patients---I appreciated that. I know he will be missed by so many, however, I feel in my heart that if there's horse racing, fishing and fun times to be had on the other side--Dr. Davis is up top having a good laugh and shining down on us all each and every day. Sending positive thoughts to everyone and that all the wonderful memories sustain you.

I have been seeing Dr. Davis since he come to Smackover Clinic. He was a very good Doctor. He would always listen to you and also talk about things. The last few times I went to see him we talked about retiring and some of the things we were going to do when we did. I also told him I was going to miss him being my Doctor when he retired and he always told me his son would step right up and become my Doctor. He was always honest with me and when he wasn't sure he could help me he would refer me to a specialist. I will truly miss him and know the town of Smackover will also. He was such a blessing to go to and had a good bed side matter. May GOD bless ya'll as a family in this sorrowful time. I will keep ya'll in my prayers.

Sheila and family,
We want to let you know how much we loved and respected Dick ! We always felt after an appointment that we had the best possible care with Dick.
My Mother was visiting and had to go to the ER. Dick saw us as he was leaving and ordered other test. As a result she was sent to Little Rock for emergency surgery saving her life.
We will miss Dick for the care he gave as our doctor but we will also miss his big smile and conversations.
May feel God's presence during this difficult time. Praying for you!!!

The love and memories of a wonderful man that empowers so many will continue on through the lives and generations of thousands. Each glowing smile, enthusiastic greeting, and personal witty banter will give each of his loved ones a heartfelt warmth knowing that he was loved and loved by so many. No one word or gesture could explain the humble and great man, but seeing him walk in and smile did, it said everything you needed to know in a true friend. Always and Forever.

I have you all in my prayers. I’m thinking of you often. I have only positive memories of Doc! He was a great doctor for my family since 1990. I met him as a resident and knew he was something special. Probably the best diagnostician I have ever met! He also was a friend. I know he made everyone feel like they were personal friends and that meant so much.
As an ED/ ICU nurse I learned so much from him that I have carried through my career. He also is the one that encouraged me to return to school to become a nurse practitioner. He was also gracious enough to let me do my internship with him. That was invaluable and really just a lot of fun. I watched him care for people he deeply cared for, break bad news and often times belly laugh with his patients he called friend! I have spent the last few days thinking over “medical” things he has taught me that I know Keith would find encouraging and probably humorous. But I wanted to share one funny story you may not know.
Around early 90’s when he still had his old Ford truck he had driven all through medical school I had to call him to come see a patient in the ED. First of all most docs would have said just “let the ED DOC see them,” but not Dr. Davis. He insisted on driving all the way in from Smackover to see his patients to ensure they got the best care (he was right). When I called him and gave him the brief report he said “ok, in 20 minutes meet me outside by the ambulance bay.” When I asked why he replied. “ You’ll understand later.”
20 minutes later I walked outside and he pulls up and motions me over to his truck window. He looks at me very seriously and says “listen, I know you’re really smart and need to be in the ED, but can you stay out here and keep my truck running? I’m afraid if I turn it off I won’t get it restarted.” My reply was “well, of course.” Somehow he had a way of making me feel like I was doing something very important and I was honored he trusted me with his truck! Love to all!!!

I am submitting this for my parents who are patients of Dr. Davis
Receiving the news of Dr. Davis' homegoing was met with mixed emotions in the Carter's household. If anyone deserved entrance into the paradise of God, that person was the Doctor. On the other end of the scale, we were extremely grieved. He cannot be replaced. Dr. Davis was without question the best diagnostic doctor we have ever known. His personally, humor, and genuine care for his patients cannot be replaced. Our love and prayers are with his lovely family and staff.

Thank you Sheila and family for sharing him with those of us who he ministered to thru his medical expertise. We decided to begin when we met Dick, Shelia, Keith and Stephen😊 They came to Smackover and we spent time visiting and fellowshipping. We helped them move from their first house to their next rental. We spent many hours eating, riding 4 wheelers in the woods and getting lost at night. Fishing in Granddaddy' pond, listening to Sheila scream when she hooked a big catfish. Celebrating Dick and Tommy's birthdays together because they were one day apart. Dick hunting with all of the guys. Dick making house calls back in the beginning. We had some wonderful memories. Our hearts are breaking at the loss. We are praying for you Shelia and your family and all those who will miss him. God Bless you all and give you Comfort and Peace knowing we will see him again.

Such a fine man. He delivered my second baby (only son) and even realized that a mistake had been made in billing me, and I was given quite a discount by AHEC. He said not to mention it and not to pay more since I was being charged enough already. My children all went to him and found him pleasant and caring. This is so so sad.

I realized last night that I had a longer relationship with Doc than I did with my ex-husband (Doc would appreciate the humor in that). He took such good care of me for so many years, and he was kind and funny, and I am bereft knowing that he's no longer with us. I can't even imagine how his family and clinic family feel. We have lost an incredible physician and a truly great man. I can only pray that sweet memories and God's grace sustain all who respected and loved him.

As a newcomer to the Smackover community, I never had the privilege to meet Dr. Davis in person. I have however, encountered many people to whom he was their long time Primary Care Physician and who related to me how often he was there for them at some of the worst times of their lives medically speaking.
Their stories were filled with a strong undercurrent of gratitude for a man capable and always willing to bring God's healing to them. Recently I heard the story of a home-health nurse who worked with several of Dr. Davis's patients in their home, related that his patients were receiving excellent physician care.
When people call you to inform you their doctor has passed away and they break down and cry, you know that he given himself to them in a very special way, creating a very special bond.
Though I never met Dr. Davis in person, I have met him through the gratitude of those he shared his gift healing with, the love his patients have for him and the many, many ways they testify that this gifted physician went above and beyond so often for so many.
Thank you Dr. Davis for treating so many in Smackover and in Union County in the way you would want to be treated if in their shoes.
I have no doubt that you have already heard these words from the lips of the Great Physician, Well done thou good and faithful servant.
