Robert L. Hood

Dr. Robert L Hood passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 20th 2024 at South Arkansas Regional Hospital. Robert was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Shreveport, La. to W. B Hood and Ruth Gladden Hood. He was the youngest of 4 sons.

Upon graduating from Centenary College in Shreveport, La. Robert began his career with Texas Eastern Transmission before leaving to serve his country in the Army. He spent 2 years overseas in Germany before returning to the states to briefly return to work at Texas Eastern in a lab department that was located at Centenary College. This turned into an offer to teach at Centenary College.

After returning to the states, he met and married the love of his life, Winnie Essary Hood, a marriage that would last 67 years and bear 6 children, 3 of whom were unfortunately lost at birth.

During his time at Centenary, he continued his own education and with family in tow, moved to Austin, Tx to work on his PhD. He received his PhD in Chemistry from The University of Texas, “Hook Em Horns”!!! Upon receiving his PhD he returned to Centenary College where he resumed teaching.

After 23 years of teaching he made a career move which brought him to El Dorado, AR and a company called J & M Poultry, eventually to become ConAgra. Here he would work until retirement in 1994. He also taught Part-time chemistry classes for many years at South Arkansas University, El Dorado Branch.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gladden, Joe and Bill, three sons, John, David and Mark, brother-in-law, Joe Carroll, Jr. "Wolfie".

He is survived by his wife Winnie Essary Hood, a son Robert Hood and two daughters, Marion Carroll and Margaret Thorne (Jim), four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Young's Chapel. Visitation will begin at 1:00 prior to the service. Cremation services are entrusted to Young’s Funeral Directors.
