7 October, 1945 – 1 December, 2019
Carmen Velasco, age 74, passed away peacefully December 1st, 2019. Carmen took her last breath in the presence of her firstborn, Gabriela. Carmen was born on October 1945, in El Paso, Texas to Luis and Estela Velasco. She was one of ten live-birth children and her sidekick in birth is fraternal twin brother, Luis, Jr. Carmen eloped and married the father of their two children in the year 1967 in San Francisco and they divorced in 1980. This obituary confirms that she stopped being a Segovia a long time ago. Carmen loved summer Mondays in downtown El Paso. spending most of her time at McDonald's or Coney Island Hot Dogs around "La Plaza de Los Lagartos", aka, San Jacinto Plaza. While Big Macs were her favorites in her younger years, she would often ask for a Happy Meal in her later years. She enjoyed singing love songs and walking with friends along Tejas Drive right after sundown. For many years, Carmen worked in various roles as a server at the now-defunct Heinz Restaurant, housekeeper in a hotel that no longer exists on Geronimo Avenue, a lunch lady in the public school system, and volunteered to clean garbage from local parks. It suited her giving heart. She said she did it because it made her feel good to be useful. She used to always say: “Don't let what others think of you keep you from being kind anyway.” Carmen was a lover of people and gave what little she had to anyone who was in need. Her life was both a living example of this and a cautionary tale as this outlook sometimes resulted in self-sacrifice due to overriding her sense of self-preservation. Often overlooking her own needs and feelings to accommodate others, she found herself and put her children in periods of homelessness. The lesson in this is that in all things, moderation. Balance is key. Carmen is survived by her sisters, Rosa Hernandez and Julie Velasco, and brothers, Reynaldo Velasco, fraternal-twin-brother Luis Velasco, Jr., Ricardo Velasco, and George Velasco; daughters, Gabriela Segovia-McGahan and Mayra Segovia, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her mother and father - brothers Antonio, Angel, and Rodolfo will be waiting for her in the hereafter. Please join us in a celebration of her life Saturday December 7, 2019, between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. with Funeral Service at 2 p.m. at Crestview Funeral Home at 1462 N. Zaragoza, El Paso, TX 79936.
