

Carolyn Mayfield Driver passed away peacefully on January 20, 2015. She was born in El Paso, on November 2, 1922 to Anna Grace Ellis and James Davis Mayfield. She attended Crockett Elementary School and Austin High School, where she was named “All-Austin Girl”. Years later, her daughter Helen Driver was also named “All-Austin Girl “, creating a unique family legacy. Carolyn attended Goucher College in Baltimore and returned to El Paso, graduating in 1943 from UTEP, then known as Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. She later also earned a Masters Degree in counseling.
On June 14, 1944, Carolyn married Lt. Walter W. Driver of the United States Army Air Corp. They were blessed to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary last year. Carolyn felt that her purpose in life was to serve her Lord, her family and her community. She was past President of the El Paso Planned Parenthood and a lifetime member and dedicated volunteer at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, serving as chief of numerous projects and committees. With Bette Azar, she established the Ladies Auxiliary at the El Paso Tennis Club. She was a fine golfer, having won the Ladies President’s Cup Championship twice at the El Paso Country Club.
Carolyn had a lasting and meaningful impact on her children and numerous grandchildren. She showed them by example how to care for others, whether close family or complete strangers. She loved opening her home to friends and family, and was the ultimate hostess, cooking all her meals with love and affection, no matter how simple. Carolyn was close to all of her grandchildren, following every event, tournament, graduation and other special occasions with great detail and love. She was proud of her family’s long history in El Paso and especially loved the mountains and the desert southwest.
Carolyn is survived by her loving husband, Walter W. Driver, and her four children: Walter W. Driver, Jr. (Bettie) of Atlanta, Ga.; Helen Driver, of El Paso; Davis M. Driver (Ann) of Scottsdale, AZ.; Nancy D. Hunt (Robert) of San Antonio, TX, and by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Carolyn’s family sincerely thanks her physician, Dr. Branch Craige, for his long time care and friendship. Her local nieces and their spouses, Margaret and Bruce Meyer and Blythe and Steve Larson, were especially loving and supportive over the last several years. Additionally, the family would like to thank Maria Elena Celaya for her compassionate and loving care.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2:30 pm at Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell, with Rev. Ron Thomson officiating. Pallbearers will be Carolyn’s five grandsons, Donald Ball and Clay Lowenfield. Graveside service will immediately follow at Restlawn Cemetery.
