Don Terry Coro completed his circle of life, on the path determined by God before time began. Born on July 31, 1939, he joined his Savior Jesus Christ on January 22, 2017 after 77 years on this earth.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years Mary Coro, daughter Cindy Coro Axcell (Robert), sisters Althea McLlelan and Audrey Cook, and (step)children Jon Marks (Waneen), Gale Marks Spear (Brandon), Wayne Marks (Cindy), Mary T Marks Mathes (Tim), Barry Marks (Nancy), and Susan Marks Rognes (Todd), 26 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother, and grandson Robert Axcell.
At 16 years of age, with his mother’s permission, Don enlisted with the U.S. Army and served his country faithfully for 20 years in the Infantry. After deployment to various parts of the world and 2 tours in Vietnam as part of the legendary Bandito Charlie Infantry Company, Don returned to Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas. His commendations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters with letter “V” device, Purple Heart with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, and many other commendations. He retired as a First Sergeant in 1976.
Don became an HVAC technician and operated his own service company before joining Diebold as a bank locksmith where he worked for 12 years. He then established Coro Bank Lock Service Company which he operated with his wife Mary until retirement in 2004.
Don’s love of country music and dancing led him to meet his wife. Don and Mary traveled extensively, wearing out 3 motor homes and a motorcycle. Crisscrossing North America, they enjoyed visiting family, friends, and seeking out interesting sites. A rambunctious card game of Spades was always a favorite pastime. Don was an avid golfer and a Facebook fanatic, keeping his family and friends across the world entertained.
Don was known as the “Silver Dollar Man” giving away silver dollars to the joy of friends, family, servers, and almost everyone he met.
An American patriot of the highest order, Don was instrumental in the establishment of the El Paso flag site at the corner of Gateway and Diana. He would often drive his patriotically decorated truck in the annual Easter Parade, July 4th Parade, and Veterans Day Parade leading the Flags Across America entry. He was a member of the American Legion and life-member of VFW Post 8550.
