Dorothy ("Dot") Lucky, 93, beloved by her family, special friends and watchful neighbors passed away on March 23, 2017 in El Paso. Born June 19, 1923 in Hope, NM to Albert and Ola Morriss, she found a world of material scarcity offset by the blessings of a remarkable family whose 14 siblings long supported their mother and each other after Albert’s death in 1930 amidst the Great Depression. She was a preceded in death by all of her siblings, and by her husband Thomas Carl Lucky (1997), and more recently by her younger son David Carl Lucky of Seguin, TX in 2009. Dot is survived by her son Jeffrey Thomas Lucky and wife Pam of El Paso; and Mary Jeanne Lucky (wife of David) of Seguin, TX; and her adult grandchildren Brian Lucky, Carla Ruth Smith (husband, Clarence), Cameron Lucky(wife, Carol-Ann), and Jared Lucky, as well as Dot’s great grandchildren Hayes Lucky, Brandt Lucky, and David Smith. Before moving to El Paso, Dot grew up among extended family on ranches of the Sacramento Mountains, where part of her heart always remained. She graduated from Ysleta High School in 1940, excelling at academics, sports, and especially music, leading to a brief stint in the El Paso Symphony as a French horn player. She later met Tom and they married in 1949. Dot’s surpassing achievement was to be a witty, loving and insightful Mom who could make a perfect pot of chili and teach a 6-year-old how to throw a baseball with equal facility. She was fiercely independent in her later years, maintaining a house and driver’s license until her 90th birthday. Her independent spirit and incisive wit did not yield to physical infirmity. God’s grace provided friends and family, led by Pam Lucky, who enveloped Dot with all the love and care she would need until the day she went to meet her Lord.
