Edith Muehsam, born on October 7, 1925 in New Hyde Park, NY passed away on April 3, 2016. She was raised on Long Island, and graduated from Sewanaka High School with an emphasis in business. As a young woman, she worked as an administrative clerk for the United Nations from 1946 to 1950, serving first in Palestine, and then in NY. In 1948, she met Lt. Martin Muehsam at a Jewish Center dance and knew that he’d become the love of her life. They married on December 10, 1950, and she happily became an Army wife. She was a marvelous asset to her husband’s 30-year military career being she was a gourmet cook, joyous gardener, gracious homemaker, and devoted mother. Throughout her life, she volunteered (50 years!) at various Army thrift shops helping to raise monies for scholarships and other charitable causes. Additionally, she was active in the Officers Wives Club. When her children became adults, she kept busy by working at Joske’s, Casual Corner, and Gilbert’s Fashions.
Mrs. Edith Muehsam embodied generosity, thoughtfulness, hard work, and commitment. We shall remember how she prepared and shared her good cooking among family members, friends, neighbors, and pets - and for many of us, our waistlines can still attest to that! In her later years as a widow, she helped to write family stories and remained interested in current affairs. Her dear husband, Col. Martin Muehsam; her sisters, Dotty Levi and Betty Abrams and their spouses of Long Island, NY; her sister-in-law, Anita Levy of Richmond Hills, NY predeceased Edith Muehsam. She is survived by her son, Dr. Mitchell J. Muehsam of Huntsville; daughter, Carolynne Muehsam Ayoub and son-in-law Moses L. Ayoub; and beloved Lilli Martine Ayoub, her only grandchild, all of El Paso; and her brother-in law Charles Levy of Richmond Hills, NY as well as by a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm followed by a Remembrance Service at 7:00 pm at Crestview Funeral Home, 1462 N. Zaragoza.
