Gerald was born July 29, 1924 in Colonia Dublan, Chihuhaua, Mexico to Ira Wilcken Pratt and Mary Belle Merrell. At age 16 he went to Nevada to help an Uncle on a cattle ranch and graduated high school from Lund, Nevada. Immediately upon graduation, Gerald attempted to enlist in the military to help with the WWII effort, but had to wait a few months until he turned 18. He served in the Merchant Marines, assigned to the Pacific Theater until after the war ended.
Gerald married Vera Whetten on December 18, 1946. They are parents of 7 children, 37 grandchildren, and 99 great grandchildren.
Gerald has spent a lifetime of service to family, church and community. He has served as secretary- treasurer of the Zach White school PTA board, the board of trustees of the El Paso state bank, and Boy Scouts of America, serving in different capacities in both Texas and New Mexico. His 20 grandsons each earned his Eagle badge, the highest rank in scouting. A lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he has served as teacher, Bishop, Stake President, Temple President, and donated 3 years as a full time missionary with his wife in Mexico, serving as Area Welfare agent, teaching emergency preparedness and provident living.
He was employed by the local John Deere agency 50 years, eventually owning the El Paso store. A farmer at heart, he has also enjoyed shooting, deer hunting, gardening, ranching, and calf roping. In 1998 he was awarded “Cattleman of the Year.” He was a lifetime member of the NRA. Until he lost his eyesight, he had a great passion for reading, and became very well read.
