January 21, 1936 – June 21, 2025
Haskell Harris Hatfield, known to his family and friends as Dad, Papa, Uncle Harry or simply “H,” was born in El Paso and lived a full life on his terms, always in celebration of his family and friends.
He married his high school sweetheart, Kay Carter, and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage before Kay passed away in 2023. Together, they were blessed with three children – Lea Hatfield Murray (Rick) of Phoenix, AZ; Harris Carter Hatfield (Page) and Carla Gay Thompson (Mark), both of El Paso, TX. They doted incessantly on their seven grandchildren – Lindsay Murray (Jason), Troy Hatfield, Katherine Blecha (Joe), Preston Thompson, Hilary Hatfield, Derek Thompson (Chrissie), Jillian Murray and more recently, eight great grandchildren – Jack, Nora, Clark, Drew, Langleigh, Piper, Madison and Michael.
Harris loved El Paso and it loved him right back. A partner at Rogers & Belding Insurance until his retirement in 2016, he was also a lifelong member of the Million Dollar Roundtable, Kiwanis, the Order of Masons and the Del Norte Club. He dedicated many years to the Sun Bowl and served as President during its 50th anniversary year.
Sports of all kinds were a big part of his life, too. An all-El Paso athlete in high school, Harris was also President of the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame. He loved supporting the UTEP Miners, watching baseball and football, and most of all fishing with family and friends everywhere from Mexico to Montana to Brazil and countless points in between.
He didn’t let his recent near-blindness slow him down a bit. He had regular lunches with various friends five-days a week. There will be a hole in those groups that will be hard to fill. The family would like to thank Mariana, Juan, Crystal, Neima and his many friends who served as his private Uber service in getting him to and from these meals and various other appointments for the past several years.
Harris and Kay were long time members of the Church of St. Clement, and all three of their children were married there. His faith translated into how he lived his life and the generosity he showed in his charitable giving and in thanking those who helped him wherever he went.
Harris is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Haskell Doak Hatfield and Frances Lee Harris Hatfield and his wife of 68 years, Carla Kay Carter Hatfield. He is survived by his brother Dr. Dolph Lee Hatfield (Mary) of Bethesda, MD, and all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
