Inez Sidney Moilan

Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Moilan a decorated veteran; her infant brother, William Rebel Shaw; her sisters, Mrs. Nettie (Shaw) Brown and Mrs. Tommy (Shaw) Miller; her daughter-in-law, Bettye Moilan; and her granddaughter, Tamara Shea Moilan.

Inez is survived by her children, Bruce Andrew and wife, Betty, Donald W. Jr. and wife, Mary, Evan and wife, Danika, and Patricia Crossett and husband, John. She is also survived by her sisters, Mattie (Shaw) Timmerman, Ernestine (Shaw) McCrary and her brothers, James and Joe Shaw. Inez’ legacy will also be carried forward by her ten grandchildren and twenty great- grandchildren.

Inez was born on a small family farm in Cuba, Alabama, on May 22, 1925. Her parents were Evan Calvin Shaw and Dorcas Irene Walker. She grew up with four sisters and two brothers. At a very young age the children lost both their mother and father. These seven siblings endured many hard and trying times. They worked and supported each other to help each of them receive a high school degree. After Inez’s high school graduation, she went to Livingston College and earned a teaching certificate. She then began her teaching career in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Her move to Fort Benning became a very significant event in her life. There, she met the love of her life, Donald Wilfred Moilan. Don had just returned from World War II, and was recovering from war injuries. Inez and Don were married in Gulf Port, Mississippi in Inez’s Aunt Nellie’s home. Early in their marriage they completed a military tour in Germany and were ultimately transferred to Fort Bliss in El Paso. Inez and Don raised four children Bruce Andrew, Donald W. Jr., Evan Matthew and Patricia Gail (Moilan) Crossett.

While Don continued in his Army service Inez chose to continue teaching at Cadwallader Elementary School in the Ysleta Independent School District. Inez taught K-8th grade at Cadwallader for 44 years. Most of her years were spent teaching first grade. Inez was able to teach three generations of children who lived in the lower valley. She was a beloved teacher who touched the lives of many children, including disadvantaged children and children with special needs. Inez won many teacher awards throughout her career. She was most proud of being selected in the top 10 “Teacher of the Year” for the Ysleta School District. She was also very honored to have a reading garden named after her at Cadwallader Elementary School.

Both Inez and Don served with many non-profit organizations and clubs to help benefit the people of El Paso. Inez especially loved helping disadvantaged children and helping to provide food for senior members of Zion Lutheran Church. Her greatest gift was her empathetic and caring spirit that drove her desire to give to others. She was loved by many and will be missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She will be remembered by many in El Paso for the manner in which she touched their lives and hearts.

Visitation Services for Inez will be held at Kaster-Maxon and Futrell Funeral Home (8817 Dyer St.) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday June, 11, 2017. A memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran church (2800 Pershing Dr.) on Monday, June 12, 217 at 10:00 a.m. Inez will be laid to rest in a private setting alongside her husband and lifelong love Lt. Colonel Donald W. Moilan at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to contribute memorials are requested to make donations to the El Paso Alzheimers Association or the Zion Lutheran Church food pantry. Inez would be honored by the support of these organizations that she loved and served for years.
