Catholic faith was of utmost importance to him. He graduated from Austin High School in 1951. He served in the Army, stationed in Alaska. John was a salesman for Capitol Records for many years before opening his own business, Music Merchants, in San Antonio, TX. He always loved reminiscing about his days in the music industry.
John served as Big Brother/Mentor in the Volunteers in Probation Program and also with the Texas Youth Commission. He was preceded in death by his parents Arturo and Juanita Gonzalez and five siblings: Pedro (Josie), Dr. Arturo (Rue), Frank (Hortensia), Felix (Hazel), and
Delfina Romero (Frank). He is survived by his son, David Sherwood
(Susan) and grandsons John and Patrick, and his brothers, Rodolfo (Mary), Ralph (Carol), Alfred (Rubie) and a sister Virginia Velez (Phil).
He will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers are David Sherwood, Patrick Sherwood, Julian Moreno, Gabriel Lopez and Philip Velez.
Visitation will be Monday, December 6, from 5-9pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 N. Carolina. Rosary will be at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be at 12:00, Tuesday, December 7, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 8600 Winchester Rd. Burial immediately following at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
