Milton Abraham Marquez was with us for 85 years. Born in Socorro, TX on February 12, 1935 to Jose G. Marquez and Fidencia Ortiz, he was a lifelong resident of El Paso, TX. He was one of seven children with six siblings: Jose, Willie, Rodolfo, Francisca, Maria, and Josefina; all of whom have preceded him in death.
He married Florencia Galindo Marquez, his wife of 30 years, at the young age of 22 and they grew their own family of three children, seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter with two more on their way at the time of his passing. He later fathered another daughter, two more grandchildren, and was a Godfather to over 20 Godchildren. Milton was a father figure to many, where he was known as Dad, Grandpa, Nino, Tocallo, Compadre and respectfully as Mr. Marquez.
Milton actively served his country in the U.S. Army where he traveled across seas, piquing his interest in travel. Milton returned to his family in El Paso where he worked for the City of El Paso-Street Department for 30 years. He continued his service as an Army reservist for 22 years until retirement. He was a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, a fraternal and service organization.
In retirement, he followed his passion for travel and jetted across North America visiting family and friends, small towns and big cities, historical landmarks and lesser known corners of the world. He carried a giant roadmap in the trunk of his car, as driving was his preferred method of travel, always in control of his destination and ready at a whim when the wind called his name or someone needed him, anywhere. He always made it a point to stop and worship at a local Catholic church in the places he visited.
When he could no longer travel, he resided in El Paso at a veteran’s home for 9 years, becoming a resident favorite and friend to many. There, he attended many honorary ceremonies representing military veterans, received new titles such as the Wii bowling champion, a regular Bingo winner, and first resident to use Skype when it became available. He was grateful to be able to continuously practice his faith through volunteer visitors. Milton maintained his outings on a regular basis to the movies, racetrack, and family celebrations, including his own 85th birthday party. He was always surrounded by prayer, love, friendship, and respect, leaving behind family traditions, countless memories, quiet words of wisdom, and his unconditional love.
Milton has made the ultimate trip to be our Lord and passed loved ones. He will be remembered for many great things, but Faith, Love, Hope, and Charity are the words that best sum up 85 wonderful years. For that, we are grateful to God.
