With great sadness and shattered hearts , we announce the passing of an amazing daughter, sister, wife, and mother Norma Hernandez. Norma peacefully left us on July 20, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Norma was born on November 11, 1963, to Hector and Toni Duron. Norma was a devout Catholic and dedicated mother and wife. She prioritized her family through selflessness acts of service and dedicated every waking minute to those she loved.
Norma was a proud graduate of Austin High School, class of 1982. She was a member of Delta Chi and marching band, playing flute and piccolo. Prior to Austin, Norma attended middle school at Bassett Middle where she met the love of her life, Victor Hernandez. As Norma often said, Victor caught her attention by being the class clown and sports jock, usually making people laugh. Their love story began in middle school and followed them onto their young adult years, becoming high school sweethearts. Victor and Norma had an unbreakable bond and were the epitome of 'through thick and thin." After graduating high school at Austin, the two married in 1984.
Victor and Norma defined the meaning of marriage and were a pillar of companionship for their children. Norma and Victor went on to raise three children: Elizabeth, Victor Jr. and Bryan.
Norma was a selfless homemaker. She took great pride in maintaining a loving home for her family. Anyone who visited the Hernandez home was treated like family. As a devout mother, there was never an event missed. From band competitions, baseball games and tournaments, Norma was always in the audience cheering on her children. Popcorn in hand, she was seen beaming with pride at her children's events.
You could often run into Norma while she was shopping with her mother Toni, Aunt Luisa and sisters Patty and Diana. She enjoyed lunch with them and quickly followed that up with an evening out with her daughter Liza. One of Norma's favorite weekend getaways was a drive out to Ruidoso with her husband Victor. She loved watching Cowboys football, Braves baseball and Lakers basketball. She was most often seen laughing at her sons yelling at the TV.
Norma's love for the holidays is what will truly be missed the most. She loved all things Christmas. She would transform the family home into a winter wonderland, with festive decorations. Beginning in October, you could find her listening to Christmas music, usually The Carpenters, while she performed her daily routine.
Her selflessness continued when she began having grandchildren. She received the great opportunity to care for her granddaughters, Haylee and Kaytlynn, in their adolescence. A few years later came Andruw and Auriah, who quickly made Grandma Norma's house their own. Her home was filled with toys, music and games .The pantry always housed the "good snacks." For an outsider, her house may have seemed a mess at times. But Norma was happiest when the grandkids were playing with their toys everywhere. Grandpa Victor and Grandma Norma, who is also known as Sita/Gramsda, could always be found in the bleachers for their grandchildren's softball, volleyball, t-ball and soccer games. Grandpa and Gramma Norma were always present and prideful of their kids.
There are many countless and beautiful memories one can say about Norma. Many characteristics of hers will be missed. Most will agree that one of them will be missed the most and that is "the laugh." The beautiful, loud, hilarious and contagious laugh that could be heard at any family gathering. Her laugh could be heard counties away and if you weren't paying attention the laugh might startle you. We continue to hear this laugh and will hold the memory of it in our heart's forever.
Norma Hernandez is survived by her mother, Toni Duron, husband Victor Hernandez and two sisters, Patty Duran (Ronnie) and Diana LaFrance (Mike). Her legacy lives on through her children: Elizabeth "Liza", Victor Jr. "Roly" (Cristy) and Bryan (Daniela) Hernandez. Her memory will be cherished through her four grandchildren: Haylee "Leetz", Kaytlynn "Kathleen", Andruw "My Boy" and Auriah "Lizzle Girl" Hernandez.
