Ruby was born in Johnson City, TX but was raised in El Paso. She attended local schools and was active in Rainbow Girls. Ruby was a Worthy Advisor and installed to the highest level, the Grand Cross of Color, in 1957. Ruby also enjoyed roller skating, singing and had a talent for writing.
Ruby loved music, animals and children. She enjoyed Walt Disney movies and time spent with her family. She had a generous spirit and always tried to help anyone in need, in whatever way that she could. Her smile was infectious, and her embrace was welcoming.
In 1959, Ruby married Richard (Dick) Darling, a soldier stationed at Ft. Bliss. They eventually moved to San Jose, CA and began their family, welcoming a son, Richard, in 1960 and a daughter, Barbara, in 1961. But the most special day came in 1989 when her grandson, Rick, was born.
In 1970 the Darling family moved to a small farm near San Juan Bautista, CA. They were active in the Gilroy United Methodist Church, including singing in the choir. Ruby and Dick taught Sunday School and lead the high school youth group. Ruby was also a Girl Scout leader.
In October 1989 they lost their CA home to the Loma Prieta earthquake and in 1990 moved back to El Paso with Ruby’s mother and a childhood friend.
Ruby’s love of children led her to babysitting for her neighbors. When her home became too big for her to maintain, she moved to a small apartment. It was in this apartment, in 2015, that she fell and broke her hip. She recovered from the injury, but ultimately it would not be possible for her to continue living independently. She spent the next 10 years at different campuses of the Sunridge (later Simpatico) Senior Living facilities.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lillie Read, her oldest brother, Lawrence Earl Read, and her other brother, George Wesley Read.
Ruby is survived by her son Richard and daughter-in-law Ria Darling of Virginia; daughter Barbara and son-in-law Steve Naslund of Arizona; and grandson Rick Darling of Nevada. In addition to having extended family across the US, Ruby was an unofficial “Mom” to numerous others over the years that she always considered “her kids.”
A graveside service for Ruby will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM at Restlawn Memorial Cemetery, 8700 Dyer St, El Paso, TX 79904.
