Wah Lee Woo, a devoted husband, father, and community fixture, passed away January 4, 2026. Born on August 23, 1935, in Canton, China, Wah Lee’s American journey began at age 11 when he arrived in Oakland, California. He eventually settled in El Paso, Texas, where he was reunited with his father, Len Woo.
During his years at El Paso High School, Wah Lee was known for his musical talent and school spirit, participating in the A-choir, Bass Clef, Boys Sextette, Slide Rule Club, ROTC, and Senior Follies. After graduating in 1956 and attending Texas Western College, he channeled his work ethic into the family business, Plaza Grocery. Over the decades, he worked his way from the ground up to become a partner, remaining a pillar of the store until its closing in 2002.
Wah Lee and his wife, Anna, were married in Hong Kong in 1966 and shared 59 beautiful years in El Paso. In his retirement, Wah Lee stayed connected to his community through the Loya YMCA Silver Sneakers and his daily walks. He never quite lost his professional touch, frequently visiting local markets to evaluate their pricing and goods.
He leaves behind a loving legacy in his wife, Anna; his children and their spouses, William Woo and his wife Charlotte, Katherine Chang and her husband Julian, and Winston Woo; and his three cherished grandchildren, Aidan Chang, Harrison Chang, and Adeline Woo.
