Wendy Wallace Dickman, 92, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2021 in the Hospice of El Paso Compassionate Care facility. She was born on November 3, 1928 at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso to James Alton Wallace and Cora Pearl McKinney. Wendy grew up in Kern Place and attended Dudley Elementary School and El Paso High School, graduating as a proud Tiger in 1945. She then attended the University of Colorado and Texas Western College. While at Texas Western she pledged Delta Gamma Sorority and remained active in the Alumni Association until a few years ago. She loved her DG sisters and had many lifelong friends from the chapter.
After college, Wendy went to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Company as a business office customer representative. Her career spanned 35 years with many changes and promotions as the company grew into Southwestern Bell, where she retired in 1986. She always worked in the customer service sector, enjoying the interaction with people including her telephone company family. Wendy was active in the Telephone Company Pioneers until she passed. Also, she sat on the Board of Directors of the Bell Federal Credit Union during and after her career.
After retirement, Wendy pursued the things she loved. She played bridge with several different groups, traveled with her friends, shopped endlessly, watched all her favorite movies, and participated in many activities at her beloved Western Hills United Methodist Church. She was a fun grandmother who drove carpools, arranged playdates and other outrageous activities for her granddaughters and their friends. Everyone knew and adored “Nana”. Wendy also loved all sports, especially UTEP Miner basketball. She and the family attended all the games and had great memories of the 1966 National Basketball Championship season and many seasons thereafter.
Wendy was fiercely independent despite her limited vision and other physical limitations. She raised her children, Dee Ann and James alone. She insisted on living on her own until 2017 when she finally moved into The Legacy at Cimarron. In this amazing place, she found love and warmth from all her friends and caregivers. Wendy loved her bible study group there. She was the queen of trivial pursuit and master of crossword puzzles. Wendy was blessed with a sharp wit and mind until the end and always knew exactly how things ought to be. Thank you to each of the lovely people who made her last years so special. Wendy’s was a long life well lived in El Paso, the city she loved with some of the kindest people anywhere.
Wendy is survived by her family, Dee and John Cunningham, The Woodlands, TX; James and Carla Dickman, Cary, NC; and Austin and Justin Yearwood and Patty Smith, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Nana leaves her grandchildren Mandy Taylor and Chris George, Phoenix, AZ; and Lindsay and David Campbell, The Woodlands, TX; Sarah and Christy Dickman, Cary, NC.
