

Barbara Louise Cook, age 85, of Elk Rapids passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 11, 2017 with her family by her side. The daughter of Sylvester and Sara (Brown) Russell, she was born April 28, 1931 in Philadelphia PA.
Barb graduated from High School in Indianapolis in 1949. She was married to the late David W. Selch, and later married the late Dan Cook. Barb spent 30 years with her partner and friend, Richard (Jake)Spinner.
Barb was a mail carrier for the Elk Rapids Post Office for over 30 years. She was well known by her four legged friends for always having a treat ready for them at the mailbox. In her younger years, Barb was very athletic and enjoyed golfing, bowling, and even gymnastics. She taught her son, Leslie, how to play
football. She was a classically trained pianist and an avid reader. Barb enjoyed crossword puzzles and animals, especially her dogs. Later in life, Barb learned to ride a motorcycle and spent many years traveling with Richard on their bikes. She was an original member of the Elk Rapids Rescue Squad and a member of the Amvets Women’s Auxiliary.
Barb is survived by her children: Leslie (Susan) Selch, Elizabeth “Binky” (Gary) Wilson, and Susan “Suzi” Cook-Holzworth, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, all from Elk Rapids. Besides her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her husbands, Dave and Dan; her special friend
Jake, and beloved dog, Petie.
A memorial service was held at the Amvets Post #114 in Elk Rapids on Sunday March 19, 2017, at 1PM.
Memorial contributions in Barb’s name were directed to the Silver Muzzle Cottage in Elk Rapids.
Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
