

Edward M. Casey, age 80, of Elk Rapids, formerly of Waterford for over 35 years, died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Detroit on February 18, 1931, the first son to the late Edward J. and Helen (Eastlake) Casey. His early and formative years were in Royal Oak. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Detroit. As a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve, he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He served on board the Submarine USS Sea Leopard.
Upon discharge he married Maureen Clinton in Royal Oak in 1954 and she survives him. The union bore 5 children who also survive him: Daniel (Dawn) of Waterford; Michael of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; Mary Jo (Kenneth) Dietrich of Waterford; The Rev. Patrick of Canton, and Joseph of Elk Rapids. Also survived by grandchildren Patrick (Jennifer) Casey, Megan Casey, Tara Casey, Maura Casey, and Matthew Dietrich. Ed is also survived by a brother, William (Kay) of Harrison Twp., along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Ed spent most of his working years in the Industrial Roofing and Sheet Metal Industry and was very active in state and local industry associations. Starting at the bottom, he ended his career buying one of the more prominent companies in the field, T.F. Beck Company of Rochester Hills. He officially retired in 1997 and split his remaining years between his homes in Elk Rapids and Ft. Meyers Beach, Florida.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 2-4pm and 6-9 pm, with a vigil service to be held at 7p.m. at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. A mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11am at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church 143 Charles St., Elk Rapids. The Rev. Patrick Casey presiding. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Kewadin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Community Cupboard, 404 Spruce St., Elk Rapids or Munson Hospice.
