Dong Zhao, Ph.D., age 57, a dedicated scientist, devoted husband, beloved father, and cherished friend, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, warmth, and quiet strength.
Born in Beijing, China to Mingwu Zhao and Xinpu Hou, Dong graduated from the Pharmacy School of Shanghai Medical University in 1992 and later earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Environmental Toxicology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002. As a Study Director at MPI Research, a Senior Scientist at Abbott/AbbVie, and a Senior Toxicologist at the FDA, Dong dedicated his career to the safety evaluation of experimental drugs. His professional career reflected his steadfast commitment to scientific research and public health.
Dong found joy in traveling and had a keen eye for photography, often capturing the beauty and stillness of the world through his lens. He was remarkably handy and could fix nearly anything, from household items to cars. His deep knowledge of world history, coupled with his thoughtful views on geopolitics, made conversations with him both enlightening and memorable.
A lifelong tennis enthusiast, Dong shared his love of the game with his younger daughter, encouraging her to become a player herself.
Those who knew Dong will remember him as warm, well-mannered, and ever gentle, his sincerity and calm presence naturally putting others at ease. He was the kind of person who listened more than he spoke, but when he did speak, people listened.
He is survived by his parents, Mingwu Zhao and Xinpu Hou, his wife, Min Zhang, his brother, Hong Zhao, and his two daughters, Madison and Olivia Zhao, whom he loved deeply and supported unconditionally.
Dong’s life was marked by quiet excellence, deep compassion, and thoughtful wisdom.
He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
