

Iris Corrine Anderson McCrae, age 97, of Washington, DC, passed from this life on January 24, 2024. She was born on September 12, 1926, in West Virginia to parents Marie Edna Laury Anderson and Leonard Edward Anderson, Sr. Iris lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication, joy and an unwavering spirit of adventure.
Iris is survived by her: Loving Sisters Peggy L Evans (John), Othella A Rogers, Nanci A Alston, Marion A Booker , Loving Brother Leonard E. Anderson Jr., Beloved Nieces and Nephews D’Avonna Evans, John Evans III, Ramses Rogers, Alexander Alston, Joe Booker, Mia Booker, Elmeta Thornton, Leonard Anderson III, Tabitha Futch, Linda Anderson, and many great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins.
A proud alumna of West Virginia State University and a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Iris’s commitment to excellence was evident in her distinguished career as an analyst for the US Department of Navy where she proudly served for over 50 years. Iris was a member of Lincoln Memorial Methodist Congregation, singing in the choir and serving and attending for over 60 years. Iris’s love of music extended to the arts, attending plays, ballet and opera performances at the Kennedy Center and many other places in her travels.
Iris was also a member of the ‘Sassy Seniors’ travel group, with whom she explored numerous destinations around the world and within the United States, embracing every new experience with enthusiasm and curiosity. She was equally content working in her garden, solving puzzles at the beach, or engaging in her favorite activities at the YMCA, especially swimming and playing tennis.
Iris made a concerted effort to share her knowledge of music, sports, and the arts to all her siblings, nieces, and nephews. Iris’s life was a testament to the joy of lifelong learning, the importance of community, devotion to friends and family and the power of perseverance.
A visitation for Iris will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075. A funeral service will follow promptly at 11:00 AM. Interment Meadowridge Memorial Park.
