Michael Anthony Allen was born on July 8, 1963, to Laura Allen and Junius Lee Allen Jr. in Baltimore, Maryland. From the beginning, Michael was surrounded by the love and closeness of a large family that helped shape the man he would become—grounded in faith, family, hard work, and quiet strength.
Michael and his nine siblings grew up in Baltimore’s Edmondson Village neighborhood, where strong family bonds were built through shared experiences, laughter, and lasting memories. He attended Edmondson High School and graduated in 1981. A straight-A student gifted in mathematics, Michael was known for his intellect, discipline, and dedication to learning—qualities that would guide him throughout his life and accomplishments.
After graduating in 1981, Michael began his professional journey at the Bendix Radio Plant in Maryland. Even early on, he demonstrated the discipline and strong work ethic that would remain hallmarks of his character. While working full time, he continued his education and later attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Through perseverance and dedication, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems Management in 1992, reflecting his belief in growth, opportunity, and building a better future through hard work.
Michael accepted Christ at an early age and developed a deep and enduring love for God that remained the foundation of his life. He faithfully served at New Galilee Church of God in Christ Jesus for many years, where his humility, commitment, and servant’s heart led him to become Chairman of the Trustee Board. His faith was evident in both his words and actions. He could often be found quietly maintaining, repairing, or improving the church, giving his time and talents without seeking recognition. His relationship with God guided his decisions and remained a constant source of peace, purpose, and strength throughout his life.
In 1996, Michael married Tammy. Through this union, he gained a son, Daryl, whom he raised and loved as his own. Their family grew with the birth of Jessica in 1997 and Justyn in 1999. Though their marriage in 2018, Michael remained deeply devoted to his family.
Michael spent nearly 20 years working in information technology at the Social Security Administration, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and Verizon Business. He was known for his reliability, professionalism, and passion for technology. His expertise in Linux systems administration, networking, and security was widely respected, earning him a reputation as a steady, thoughtful, and highly skilled professional, manager and leader.
He was also a gifted “jack of all trades” and “master of many.” Many sought his wisdom and guidance, viewing him as a man of God, counselor, and trusted advisor. He possessed strong hands-on skills as a technology guru, carpenter, barber, and problem-solver who could repair, build, or fix almost anything.
In 2011, Michael relocated his family to the Charlotte, North Carolina area, where they founded a successful home health care company built on compassion, dignity, and service to others.
In his personal time, Michael enjoyed roller skating, biking, and playing pool, all of which brought him joy and relaxation. Fitness and health were important to him, and in later years he became especially intentional about his well-being, focusing on natural foods, fresh ingredients, and juicing. Above all, he deeply loved his family and made it a priority to stay connected, often traveling from North Carolina to Georgia and Maryland to spend meaningful time with loved ones. He treasured family photos and frequently documented life through his camera to preserve memories for generations. Michael also enjoyed singing, joking with others, and staying engaged with new technology. His favorite sayings included, “You’re a gentleman and a scholar” and “Cool beans,” often shortened to “CB.” He had a quiet way of bringing warmth and laughter into everyday moments.
Michael transitioned on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at his home. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Allen, and his father, Junius Lee Allen Jr. He is survived by his children, Daryl Smith, Jessica Ruderman, and Justyn Allen; daughter-in-law, Ariel Smith; son-in-law, Bryan Ruderman; grandchildren, Lon’dyn and Genesis Smith; and his nine siblings and their families: Mervin Allen, Kelvin “Joe” Allen, Denard David Allen, Debra Ann Brown, Jacqueline Denise “Niecy” Purnell, Karen Michelle Butler, Bernadette Morris, Rodney Allen, and Laureen “Reenie” McFadden; along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
