Michael “Mike” Tauber, 71, of Linthicum, Maryland, passed away on January 26, surrounded by the legacy of a life devoted to family, community, and hard work. Born on April 8, 1954, Mike was a lifelong resident of Linthicum, a town he loved deeply and served tirelessly. He was a loving husband to Sharon Tauber, a devoted father to Ashley, Kaitlyn, and Michael, and a proud grandfather to Lacey, Autumn, Ava, and Evelyn. He was also the beloved companion of his loyal dog, Jake, who brought him endless companionship and joy.
Mike was truly one of a kind—the kind of person who never hesitated to help, whether you were family, a neighbor, or a stranger stranded on the side of the road. His generosity, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to others earned him the honor of being named Honorary Mayor of Linthicum, a title that reflected his decades of community service and leadership.
Mike owned and operated Tauber’s Towing, a family business with roots dating back to around 1930, originally founded as an Amoco Service Station by his grandfather and great uncle. He began working alongside his father at just nine years old, learning the trade from the ground up and developing a lifelong respect for the towing profession. Through Tauber’s Towing, Mike helped keep local roads safe and was always ready to lend a hand—day or night—to anyone in need.
Mike took great pride in preserving the traditions of towing. He famously restored a 1963 Dodge D550 Power Wagon with a 1968 Holmes 600, meticulously returning it to bare metal and rebuilding it piece by piece. The truck went on to win Best of Vintage Class at the American Towman Exposition, serving as a tribute to the era he loved and the father who taught him the trade.
Beyond towing, Mike was an accomplished and passionate late model race car driver. Racing was in his blood, and he proudly competed at many racetracks including Dorsey Speedway, Delaware International Speedway, Georgetown Speedway in the70s and 80s. Driving car number 14, Mike celebrated multiple wins—moments that brought him immense pride and perfectly captured his competitive spirit. He lived by the words of his favorite racer, A. J. Foyt:
“You get out in front — you stay out in front,” a quote that reflected not only how he raced, but how he lived his life.
Above all else, Mike will be remembered for his kind heart, his willingness to help anyone who asked, and his unwavering devotion to his family and community. Linthicum was not just where he lived—it was who he was. Mike Tauber’s legacy lives on in the roads he cleared, the races he won, the traditions he preserved, and the family he loved so deeply.
