Scotty, a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 3, 2013, at his home in Ellensburg, Washington. The owl called his name too soon at 69 years of age, but he leaves his loved ones with the hope that he is now at rest in heaven.
Scotty was born in 1943 in Redding, California, to Vivian Hussey Large and Lawrence Liggett Large, Sr. He spent his childhood in Weaverville, California. Enjoying the outdoors from early on, he loved hiking the Trinity River and dedicated himself to Boy Scouts, achieving the highly honored Eagle Scout award. He was an aspiring athlete and worked hard throughout high school eventually earning a football scholarship to Chico State College.
A fulfilling teaching career began in northern California where he taught middle school English for five years. He then continued his career in Kenai, Alaska, where he also directed many school dramas and dedicated himself to coaching, and then retired after 20 years.
His darling wife, Julianne Ullrey Large, joined him in Alaska for a life of adventure and joy in 1971 after their wedding in Julie’s childhood home in Yuba City, California. He built their Alaska home on the banks of the Kenai River, where they raised their three daughters. As a dedicated and involved father, he spent many hours supporting his daughters at swim team events and practices. Scotty, the true outdoorsman, enjoyed the wilderness entirely. From guiding fishing trips on the Kenai to hunting and fishing throughout the state with family and friends, Scotty loved his time in Alaska.
The family moved to Ellensburg, Washington, in 1994. Scotty continued his pursuit of hunting and fishing and made many good friends in his years. His most joyful times were with his family, especially his grandchildren. Scotty was known for his generous heart and sense of responsibility to help others. He made friends wherever he went and genuinely cared for his loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, Leslie Bynum. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Julie of Ellensburg; three daughters, Abby (Lee) Cooper of Kennewick, WA, Teal (Michael) Robinson of Bellingham, WA, and Torrie Large of Portland, OR; sisters, Betsy Thornton and Lauri Foster; brother, Lindsay (Terry) Large; multiple nieces, nephews, and extended family; four adored grandchildren, Annabel, Meddie Ann, Wyatt, and Natilee Cooper; and the expectation of Baby Robinson in February of 2014.
An informal memorial service will be held in celebration of Scotty’s life on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 5:00 pm at 490 Brown Road in Ellensburg. Condolences can be left for the family at www.steward-williams.com.
