Bruce was born in Glen Ridge, NJ to Grover “Carl” and Eleanor Rudolph. He was raised in Cedar Grover, NJ and attended Memorial High School. He was on the track team and lettered in pole vaulting.
Bruce's first year of college was at Yankton College in Yankton, South Dakota. The South Dakota weather motivated Bruce to transfer to Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. Bruce earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1971. In addition to his degree, he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He also started his surfing career at nearby New Smyrna Beach.
After college, Bruce’s love of surfing inspired him to move to San Diego, CA. The drive west led him straight to Ocean Beach. In Ocean Beach he decided to pursue a career in construction. He joined the carpenter’s union and took classes at Mesa College at night to obtain his general contractor's license.
He successfully started Rudolph Construction, a framing contracting business that grew to be a general contracting company building custom homes. His partnership with Chris Moore started Rancho Coast Builders. During this time, he met his wife Sarah, and they were married in 1989. Closely followed by the birth of their daughter Laura Emily Rudolph.
Bruce shared his love of the ocean and nature with Sarah and Laura. There were many trips and adventures that included surfing in Mexico, trout fishing in the Sierras, ski trips throughout the West, SCUBA diving adventures in the Caribbean, and boating at Bass Lake. Bruce joined the Oceanside Senior Anglers and enjoyed sport fishing off the San Diego and Mexican Coast. Bruce served up many a tuna, yellow tail, calico bass, etc. dinner for friends and family.
Bruce was diagnosed with Leukemia in early October. Sadly, the cancer was very aggressive and fast moving. Bruce is survived by his wife Sarah Rudolph, daughter Laura Rudolph (Greg Mercer), sister Pam Souther (Bill Souther), brother David Rudolph (Rachel Greenberg) and loving nieces and nephews.
