Carl's life was marked by an unwavering dedication to the University of Michigan, where he earned his Economics degree in 1956. The ultimate Wolverine, Carl was a football season ticket holder during his college and later years, continuing his passionate support of the university academics and athletics throughout his life.
A proud Michigan father, Carl’s sons Joshua Judson, Jacob Robert, and Jacob’s wife, Karin Hensley Stern all graduated from U of M. An avid fan braving rain, snow, and frigid temperatures to cheer on the Wolverines to victory, Carl’s commitment to the university extended beyond the football field.
Carl was actively involved in supporting neurological research through the U of M Medical School by contributing to projects that support brain and depression research. Carl also served on the Advisory Council for the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC), an organization of academic medical research centers, founded at the university.
Carl’s career in the insurance industry began in 1958 in Detroit, Michigan and took him eventually to San Diego where he became an official “Wolverine in Paradise,” serving on the U of M alumni club board of governors.
Carl is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Dollar Stern, his son, Jacob, married to Karin Hensley Stern, with their children, Reagan, Zachary, and Emma, his daughter, Lois Cohen and her children, Annie, Brad, and Jocelyn, his son Jack Stern, married to Margaret, and Jack’s children, Allison and James.
