CARLSBAD—
Mary Catherine Carpenter Grant, our greatly loved matriarch, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2019, aged 98 years.
She was born in Holtville, California, to Willard Weed Carpenter and Madge Lavina Cox Carpenter, both deceased.
She grew up in Southern California and then enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC) in 1943. She met her husband, John Harvey Grant, in Germany where they were both sergeants in WWII. After the War, she and John moved back to California and graduated from Pomona College thanks to the GI Bill. They finally settled in Carlsbad in 1956, where they lived and worked the rest of their lives.
Together, she and John developed commercial real estate that provided opportunities to their daughters and grandchildren, for which the family will be forever grateful.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, John, and infant son, John Jr. She is survived by her brother, Marvin Willard Carpenter; and her two daughters, Jane Carpenter Grant Usatin and Gail Harvey Grant. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Netanya Ruth Cranford, Joseph John Grant, Anthony Paul Grant, and Ariel Chauncey Rivka Garatoni; and eight great-grandchildren, Brockton Cole Grant, Alaris Daniella Dayzie, Thomas Grant Dayzie, Ian Michael Greer, Jadin Rose Grant, Kai Jonas Grant, Adia Elizabeth Grant, and Azariah Amarian Grant.
Her services are Saturday, September 28, at El Camino Memorial at one o’clock. The military burial is Monday, September 30, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial plantings of trees are welcomed. She always had the benefit of her family and Earth in mind.
