Paul Hughes (70) of Champagne Village, Escondido, CA died November 30th at Palomar Medical Center. Born in Buffalo, New York on February 18, 1942, Paul was a lifelong golfer and sports fanatic, especially for college basketball.
Paul is survived by son David of Atlanta, Georgia: daughter Karen of Orono, Maine; wife Suzanne of Coronado, California; and six grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by father Matt, mother Dorothy, and brother Lambert all of Buffalo, New York; as well as longtime companion Sharon Groepper of Champagne Village.
Known in his childhood neighborhood as "Moose", Paul attended PS 63 and Bennett High School in Buffalo. Playing strike out and getting into trouble with pal Doc Orsolits was a favorite pastime of his youth and they remained lifelong friends, playing many golf events together. Paul married Suzanne Weirich and had son David in 1963 and daughter Karen in 1965. The family moved to Westerville, Ohio in 1970 where Paul was an active member of Delaware Country Club. Longing for warmer weather, the family relocated to San Diego in 1978. After living several years in Mexico and earning his "Pablo" moniker, over the last decade Paul enjoyed retirement work as a Ranger and Starter at The Lawrence Welk Resort, where a memorial bench will be placed out on the golf course in his honor.
"When you're thirsty you drink, when you're tired you sleep"- sleep well, Pablo.
