This is an article I wrote about Sung for my Newsletter in April 2016. It has a lot more detail than the obituary. Sung was VERY special to me. After I wrote this article, we became close. She was my mother's age, but she was always this little girl from Korea to me. 
Choe Sung Sun was born in 1942 in a small village named Kapyong, Korea. Her mother came from five generations of Korean warriors. Her father, a village leader, owned a large ranch where he grew rice and fruit. One of Choe Sung Sun’s favorite memories is of accompanying her father around the ranch on a cow which was tethered to her father’s enormous horse. She had three sisters and an adopted brother. In 1950, her parents were killed in war and she fled further south with her uncle and his family. During this time, Choe Sung Sun was adopted by three women who treated her kindly. When she was 16, she returned to her village to get her mandated identification card and was heartbroken to see that her family home had been burned to the ground. Soon after, Choe Sung Sun was reunited with her oldest sister and began working in the retail and wholesale gift shop business. She saved money and opened her own gift shop where she worked until she got married and moved to Escondido with her new husband. Over the next three years she learned English, learned to drive and be-came a U.S. Citizen. Choe Sung Sun had two children, a daughter and a son, and returned to work when her son was 7. She had a long successful career at Puritan-Bennett Life Support Systems , where she worked for 18 years as a team leader, trainer, quality control specialist and safety monitor. She designed over 100 hand tools for the company, earning her many awards. When asked what her proudest accomplishment was, she said “I am proud that although I came to this country with no formal education and unable to speak English, I was able to learn everything I needed to know. I am most proud that my children have become educated and successful.”
