

Alexander Ray Belcher, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026. Born to James and Mary (Moore) Belcher on October 30, 1936, in Provo, Kentucky, Ray lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a passion for his many interests.
In 1955, he began his career as a barber at Fairlawn Shopping Center, where he served the community for nearly two decades. In 1973, Ray retired from barbering and began a new career with Mead Johnson, working as a forklift driver in the formula division until his retirement in 1998, when he devoted himself to caring for his beloved wife, Sue.
Outside of his professional life, Ray was known for his love of tropical fish, particularly Bettas. He was an active member of the International Betta Congress and served as President of the Evansville Aquarium Association.
Through years of study and dedication, he successfully developed his own hybrid Betta variety, earning the respect and admiration of fellow hobbyists and enthusiasts.
For nearly twenty years, he called Panama City Beach, Florida, home. There, he enjoyed spending countless hours on the adjoining golf course, fishing, and embracing the coastal lifestyle he loved.
Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly Sue Belcher, and his brother, James Belcher.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Laswell and her husband, Steve; his son, Phillip Belcher; and his daughter, Patti Nelson and her husband, Kevin. He is also survived by his sisters, Virginia Mayo and Carolyn Wuertz; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory for generations to come.
Ray will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his quick wit, his tenacity, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and his family.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Alexander East Chapel. A funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial at Alexander Memorial Park.
