Billy C. Horton

He was a US Navy Veteran serving as a Mechanics Mate 2nd Class on the USS Valley Forge Air Craft Carrier in Korea. Billy retired from SIGECO in 1996 after working at Culley Station for 40 years as a control operator and prankster.

He was very proud of his involvement in the game of golf. Growing up as a golf caddie, he later played golf and graduated from Central High School (Class of 1950). He secured numerous victories in golf tournaments while representing the Navy golf team and later participated as an amateur golfer in Evansville. Billy was a member at Fendrich Men’s Club. He also enjoyed hunting and bowling. He loved gambling, horse races at Ellis Park, playing cards and pool. His proficiency in billiards propelled his pool team to Las Vegas where they competed in national pool competitions.

He was a member of the VFW. One of the highlights of his life was attending the 7th Honor Flight of Southern Indiana in Washington, DC on October 21, 2017.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebecca Lee Horton (1953); wife of 44 years, Rosalind Horton (1996); brother, Robert Horton (1999); and sister-in-law, Jo Ann Horton (2023).

He is survived by his daughters, Donna Merkley (John), Linda Baker (Stephen); son, John Horton (Kristi); grandchildren, Andy Merkley (Becca), Nick Merkley (Haley), Jessica Overall, Angela McClellan, John McClellan (Stella), Katie LaHaye (Taylor), Brad Horton (Brooke), and Dillion Horton (Christa); 12 great-grandchildren and counting; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN officiated by Chaplain Scott Hutcheson, followed by burial at Sunset Cemetery with full military rites.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday, March 14, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
