Earl served in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division during Vietnam. He was a retired coalminer and active member of the UMWA. He was also a former iron worker.
Earl was a former stock car driver and a big nascar fan. He enjoyed bass fishing.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel L (Edging) and John D Thornton.
He is survived by his children, Carol S Burnett, Theresa L Hobbs, and John J Thornton; grandchildren, David L Hobbs III, Haley L Wade, Miranda M Hobbs and five great grandchildren.
A prayer service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Alexander West Chapel. Friends may visit 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 and Thursday 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
