Emma “Sue” Pickens, 96, of Newburgh, passed to her heavenly home Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Hamilton Pointe. She was born May 22, 1918 in Diamond, KY, to the late John Frank and Mary Ruth (Cullen) Poole.
She was a 60 year member of Heritage Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for much of that time. She met her husband, Gene, while at Servel where she was a riveter. Emma loved this country and the bounty that God blessed her with. She was always in amazement at all that was provided on the shelves at the grocery. Emma was always up for a game of Bingo with her grandchildren. She was a very loving and selfless person would do anything for others. Some of her greatest joys were cooking for others and spending time with her family.
She was a faithful follower of Jesus and was always content in all things. Even as she suffered from Alzheimer’s, she was able to do table blessings that the grandchildren said rivaled Billy Graham.
Emma is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Gene Pickens; granddaughter, Angela Pickens; sister, Frankie Gentry; and her parents.
She is survived by her two sons, James E. (Lonna) and John (Susan); grandchildren, Jennifer Spaulding and Lindsey (Zach) Tieken, all of Evansville, IN, Stephanie (Rob Berntsen) Pickens of Des Moines, IA, and Leslie (Mike) Tegmeyer of Winslow, IN; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Pastor Maurice Melton, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
The family extends a special “thank you” to caregivers that became friends, and all of the wonderful staff at Hamilton Pointe.
