To know Fred Chumley, was to know a man that loved his family, loved to eat, and loved the car and boat races. Fred was a proud alumnus of Culver School and Bosse High School, Class of 55 meeting monthly with classmates to visit and catch up. Some of his fondest memories are those of his beloved classmates that together have celebrated marriages, kids, grandkids, retirement, and many other milestones of life together.
On any given Sunday night in the summer, you could catch Fred at Tri-State Speedway. Together with his son Gary, and his grandkids, Jennifer, Amy, and Little Gary, the Chumleys would sit in the same seats year after year to cheer on their favorite race car drivers. Everyone would chuckle when on the way home grandpa would get a speeding ticket for forgetting that he wasn’t in a race car himself.
Fred was a member of Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener’s Association, the Oak Hill Conservation Club, and the Ohio Valley Common Ground Environmental Health Organization. He was a charter member of the National Hot Rod Association and a USI Alumni.
Fred lived a full and rich life. He enjoyed fixing up cars, upholstering furniture, gardening, attending the car races, and of course spending time with friends and family. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now with the Lord, where he joined other family members and continues to watch over us and no longer has to suffer.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lydia Sue Chumley; parents, Edward and Edna Chumley; and sister, Connie Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Peggie Sue; daughter, Shelly Robyne Chumley of Texas; son, Gary Ray Chumley; son, Edward “Stan” Chumley; daughter, Tamara Jo Chumley; daughter, Gina Marie Chumley, all of Evansville; grandchildren, Caleb, Kristy, Melissa, Jennifer, Amy, Gary, Jr., John, Jeff, Alicia, Teresa, Dusty, Amanda, Trisha, Jamie, Anthony, and Michael; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Chumley; sister, Gail Ingram; brother, Jim Chumley; brother, Curtis Chumley.
Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Jack Feldbusch with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM and Thursday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
