

Harlan was raised on the westside of Evansville and attended Perry Heights and Reitz High School. He was a member of the Navy, serving with the SeaBees. He was a current member of St James West and former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, where he was a very active member. Harlan taught Sunday School, was an Usher, Greeter, Elder, Trustee and Council President.
Harlan began working for Industrial Contractors as a carpenter in 1962. He had a distinguished 40 year career, working his way to Vice President of Construction and retired as President.
He was active outside of work and church as well. He taught building trades for 8 years. Harlan was a member of Carpenter's Local 90, Associated General Contractors (AGC), was a United Way board representative, member of the Diabetes Foundation board, United Way board member, Member of Hadi Shrine, Scottish Rite and Evansville Masonic Blue Lodge 464. He was a Kentucky Colonel, and past member of Western Hills Country Club.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Lynn Batteiger; and brother-in-law, Bill Steinhauer.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Judith Batteiger; daughter, Lisa Conkling (Tom); grandchildren, Kasey Gathercole (Nick), and Ashley Lash (Adam), great grandchildren, Hazel Gathercole and Finley Lash; sister, Joyce Steinhauer; nieces and nephews; cousins, cousinettes, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday May 13, 2026 at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street, Evansville, IN, officiated by Rev. Gene Backes. Burial will take place at Alexander Memorial Park. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
